Position Summary

About Us

UpTogether is a systems change organization that recognizes that poverty is created by systems, rooted in racism and perpetuated by false views of people considered “poor.”

We seek to change policies, systems, and underlying beliefs so that all people in the United States are seen and invested in for their strengths and are able to build power, reinforce their autonomy, and drive their own economic and social mobility.

What We Do

UpTogether collaborates with individuals, families, funders, government agencies and community partners to:

  • Invest in families and individuals with limited incomes by providing them with cash they can use however they wish, no strings attached
  • Amplify stories to change the narrative and tell the true lived experiences of people facing financial hardship and financially under-resourced communities
  • Mobilize around local policies and practices that support and accelerate socioeconomic mobility

The Position

UpTogether is seeking a Senior Research Manager to advance the implementation of UpTogether’s learning agenda. This role will manage multiple research initiatives, including external evaluations, and will be responsible for centralizing findings. The ideal candidate will enjoy combing through research reports and sharing learnings, as well as diving into the data themselves.

UpTogether has recently implemented a learning agenda to fill knowledge gaps around our theory of change. This role will collaborate with internal stakeholders to align research to UpTogether’s learning agenda, tracking progress and reporting on findings throughout the research process. Research initiatives are typically led by either the Analytics team or external evaluators.

This role reports to the Director of Analytics and will work collaboratively with the Partnerships & Revenue team. We are very active on Slack and are focused not only on doing meaningful work but also enjoying the process of working and building together.

This is a 100% remote position (must be based in the United States), so the successful candidate will have a reliable internet connection and functional work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a central research repository on findings from evaluations and internal analyses about the UpTogether Approach
  • Track progress on UpTogether’s learning agenda, compiling findings from relevant research and regularly reporting out to internal stakeholders
  • Manage the implementation of external evaluations; review budgets and timelines, track progress towards deliverables, and coordinate payment of vendors and research participants
  • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders throughout the research process (external academic researchers, internal technical and non-technical staff, research participants)
  • Review data sharing agreements (DSA) for ethical data sharing practices, accuracy, and feasibility
  • Contribute to research conducted internally by the Analytics team, from drafting survey questions to cleaning and analyzing data to meet partner learning objectives
  • Code surveys in Qualtrics, distribute surveys to segments of members, and maintain documentation about survey administration
  • Support the development and maintenance of data documentation for survey data
  • Promote best practices in safeguarding data privacy and confidentiality

Qualifications, Attributes & Skills

  • Experience designing and implementing social science research projects, particularly evaluation research using survey methodologies
  • Knowledge of statistical methods to analyze survey data
  • Proficient in data cleaning and analysis using software like R, Python, or SQL
  • Comfort deriving insights from data and presenting findings to non-technical audiences
  • Knowledge of ethical practices for human subject research, including data privacy and security
  • Domain expertise in social policy and anti-poverty programs
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to learn new skills as needed
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, effectively organize and manage time, including ability to set priorities to meet all project and organizational needs in a timely fashion

Ideal Candidate

  • Experience running experimental and/or quasi-experimental research studies
  • Knowledge of research on cash transfers
  • Experience with Qualtrics
  • Experience with code sharing and version control, ideally on Github, or desire to learn
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies as needed
  • Proven ability to thrive in a remote work environment; self-directed, proactively reaches out, responsive, and comfortable in a virtual setting
  • Thrives in a fast-changing environment, flexible in the pursuit of goals and able to pivot when needed
  • Demonstrated commitment to, or passion for, our mission; deep belief and trust in the innate capabilities of low-income families and communities and willing to engage in conversations aimed at addressing erroneous stereotypes about low-income people and people of color
  • Strong commitment to anti-racism and demonstrated interest in helping build systems that advance racial equity
  • A deep belief in and operates according to UpTogether’s Core Values

About Us Continued

The UpTogether Approach recognizes and honors people’s strengths, abilities, and self-determination. Our strength-based view is the foundation of how we invest in families and the heart of our strategy to change systems. Here are the three guiding principles of the UpTogether Approach—and how that translates into action.

Our Pillars Why We Do It How We Do It
Community People benefit from the power of community, resources, knowledge, and support to help one another. We collaborate with members and partners to create more opportunities for people to connect.
Capital People must have access to the resources they need to thrive. We offer financial support to individuals and families through unrestricted cash.
Choice People are the experts in their own lives and need full control over their time and resources. We trust that people can make decisions for themselves and their families, so our support comes with no strings attached.

Our Values:

  • Community: We’re better together than we are alone, and we know that with the support of our neighbors, family and friends, all of us will have a better shot at achieving our goals and dreams.
  • Impact: We focus our time and energy on collective work that will have the largest impact for people experiencing financial hardship.
  • Collaboration: We center the lived experiences of our members, partner with them to change systems and work with them to co-create opportunities for people to reach their financial goals.
  • Racial Equity: We are committed to being an anti-racist organization, and we promote anti-racist policies that eliminate the racial wealth divide.
  • Leadership: We intentionally create space for everyone to lead, regardless of their title.
  • Choice: We respect everyone’s autonomy and know each person is capable of making their own decisions.
