Job Description: Deputy Communications Director

The Spanberger for Governor campaign is seeking an experienced, organized, and self-motivated communications professional to serve as Deputy Communications Director on the most high-profile race in the nation in 2025. The Deputy Communications Director will be responsible for assisting in the management of the communications team’s day-to-day operations, playing a critical role in driving an aggressive earned media program, and producing and providing information from the Campaign to the Virginia public and the media.

The Deputy Communications Director will report directly to the Communications Director and work closely with other departments. This is a full time position based in Richmond, Virginia.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Communications Director in executing the Campaign’s overall communications strategy and growing Rep. Spanberger’s brand in Virginia.
  • Managing and strengthening relationships with Virginia and national print, radio, TV, and digital outlets, alongside the Press Secretary.
  • Serving as an on-the-record spokesperson for the Spanberger for Governor campaign.
  • Drafting both external and internal written communications materials — including memos, press releases, written statements, talking points, and more.
  • Playing a key role in rapid response and coordinating with key external stakeholders.
  • Supporting the communications team in driving aggressive earned media campaigns.
  • Crafting message guidance and daily talking points for surrogates.
  • Supporting other departments including policy, political, digital and organizing with communications materials and ensuring message consistency.
  • Preparing and staffing Rep. Spanberger for interviews, press conferences, and media events.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Multiple cycles of communications experience with political campaigns, the Virginia General Assembly, Capitol Hill, or other relevant roles.
  • Passionate about Rep. Spanberger’s message.
  • Excellent writing ability and close attention to detail.
  • Sharp organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • A desire to work long campaign hours, including evenings and weekends in 2025.
  • Ability to manage and complete multiple projects under competing and tight deadlines.
  • Access to a car and ability to easily travel.

Compensation:

$7,500/month, commensurate with experience. Health, vision, and dental insurance are included with Employee premiums covered 100% by Spanberger for Governor.
