POSITION OVERVIEW
The Executive Director is appointed by the Executive Board and shall serve at the direction of the Executive Board and shall administer the day-to-day affairs of the union and be an advisor to the executive board. All actions taken by the executive director or designee on behalf of the union shall be subject to review by the executive board. The executive director shall assign and supervise the staff of the local union and in accordance with the staff contract and will lead any contract negotiations with the staff union. The executive director is authorized to function as a cosigner of checks drawn on the local funds when an officer is unavailable.
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
ACE-AFSCME Local 2250 is one of AFSCME’s largest education support personnel locals, representing over 6,000 members in Prince George’s County. The local also has an affiliate relationship with the Maryland State Education Association/NEA, which provides members with legal services, professional development opportunities, and legislative advocacy surrounding education issues. Local 2250 has a rich history of members standing up and fighting for the essential services for every child to be successful in and out of the classroom. Local 2250 is currently seeking an Executive Director who has a proven track-record as a progressive leader with an innovative and creative mindset. The goal for Local 2250 is to build and strengthen our relationships with all our members through education and technology. Member involvement encourages activism and strength in numbers making for a strong Local 2250.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Organizational Management
- Make major administrative decisions for the union.
- Work in partnership with the President and Executive Board (i.e., planning and organizing governance meetings of the union)
- Serve as advisor to the Executive Board and its committees with the President.
- Assist the Executive Board in understanding its policy development, role, and responsibilities.
- Keep abreast of professional and educational trends.
- Maintain good working relationships with elected officials, the local AFL-CIO Central Labor Council, MSEA/NEA, and other unions and community groups.
- Prepare and submit regular reports to the Executive Board and membership meetings.
Staff Management
- Serve as chief of staff.
- Provide leadership for staff commitment to the union’s policy, goals, and objectives.
- Implement the policies established by the Executive Board and the membership on a dayto-day basis.
- Assign staff resources to programs and projects as deemed necessary.
- Participate in the development and delivery of education and training for the staff, leadership, and activists.
- Coordinate, direct, and evaluate the work of staff employees, delegating supervision to other management employees as appropriate.
Corporate Management
- Develop and maintain operation budget with regulatory accountability to the Executive Board.
- Oversee compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university required, advance degree preferred at least 5 years of experience managing people including at least 3 years leadership role in, social justice, advocacy, or political environment.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, effective communications, listening, writing, and conflict resolution skills are required.
- A record of successful leadership experience in positions of increasing responsibility including management at a senior level for at least three years
- Experience in grievance writing.
- A record of life-long learning, including recent professional development work i.e., negotiations and administration of collective bargaining agreements
- Experience in managing issue-based, policy advocacy- or electoral campaigns incorporating grassroots organizing and creative communications, strategies; and supervising full-time advocates/activists showing the ability to inspire and motivate teams to work with a clear direction and purpose.
- Background in public policy, labor advocacy, and/or business administration
- Ability to oversee and execute political and legislative relations, activities and campaigns that impact our union, including diplomatic relations with the elected and administrative officials.
- Experience managing budgets, supervising/leading teams, and fulfilling multiple priorities and projects effectively within budget and time guidelines.
- Experience with internal and external organization with labor unions
- Experience in grievance writing
- Demonstrates computer proficiency including database, spreadsheet, email, Internet, word processing, virtual meetings, and social media
- Ability to work long, irregular hours and weekends.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- Ability to exercise excellent judgment while working under pressure.
- Experience reporting to and advising an elected executive board.
