Organization Overview

America Votes works year-round to build a more representative democracy, strengthen every American's right to vote, and win elections in key states.

America Votes leads a robust, growing coalition of more than 400 progressive organizations across the country, building coordinated plans and executing shared strategies to win elections. America Votes provides a range of services to partners, including strategic planning, advocacy and electoral campaign coordination, data tools and targeting services, and on-the-ground leadership in states.

For more than 20 years, America Votes has been the common link between many of the most influential and impactful issue and membership organizations in the country, serving as the coordination hub of the progressive community. America Votes' work has brought together a wide range of causes and built a unified coalition that has transformed how the progressive community works. Together, America Votes and its partners have engaged communities across the country to act on critical issues - from fighting for working families, to defending reproductive freedom, to protecting the environment, and more - and mobilized millions of voters.

Racial Equity Statement

As a leader of collaborative efforts to mobilize voters, protect voting rights, and win elections, America Votes is committed to advancing racial equity within our organization and across our coalition. We acknowledge the systematic racism that permeates all facets of our society, including the right to vote. America Votes is also engaging with an understanding of the ways gender, sexuality and other forms of oppression intersect with race and how those relationships impact inequities our staff, our partners, and the communities that we engage in our work face.

America Votes strives to model our commitment to racial equity through our internal and external operations, programs, and partnerships. We acknowledge the inequitable structures that continue to exist and are moving forward with a sustained commitment in time, resources and people to challenge structural racism and work towards creating a reflective organization and democracy

Position Description

America Votes is looking for an Analytics Director who can dig into questions from across the organization and lead the Analytics team in turning those questions into insights and guidance for staff and partners. The ideal candidate is a mid-career data practitioner with experience managing and coaching staff; a love of presenting complex data in actionable ways; and a deep understanding of direct voter contact program, data, and strategy.

The Analytics Director will manage a team that includes a Data Analyst (focused on dashboards and visualizations) and Data Scientist (focused on complicated analysis at scale). This role will also work closely with other parts of the National Data Team, namely the Data Engineering and Data Support verticals. This is an exciting opportunity that leverages America Votes' unique position as the coordinating hub for independent groups on the progressive side - you'll have access to voterfiles, VAN data, and models with the mandate to make that data useful and accessible.

This is a permanent position that reports to the Deputy National Data and Targeting Director and is not union eligible.

Position Responsibilities

  • Team and Project Management: Serve as a manager and coach for the Analytics Team. Create a team roadmap, ensure projects are clearly defined and delegated, lead code review and other technical coaching. Collaborate with the Engineering and Data Support teams within the national data department.
  • Analysis, Insights, and Storytelling: Translate program questions into analysis plans, then lead your team to create and present actionable insights. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and presenter, and also has experience coaching other staff on communication skills.
  • Dashboards and Visualization: Set the strategy and roadmap for our dashboards and other visualization projects, then support the Data Analyst in making that vision a reality. Look for opportunities to standardize and automate visualization work.
  • Organizational Leadership: Build relationships organization wide and work closely with the Campaigns team to support the state-by-state electoral planning process, with a strong focus on data and analysis that centers equity.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Must Haves

  • Political Experience: At least two cycles of analytics experience at a political campaign or at a progressive organization, with a strong understanding of voter contact strategy and experience working with voter files and VAN data.
  • Management Experience: At least one prior role as a people manager, with demonstrated experience growing your team's skills and collective impact.
  • Expert SQL skills: You should have worked in a cloud data warehouse before and be comfortable writing and optimizing complex queries, and be able to review and coach other staff on SQL code.
  • Familiarity with Python or R: Review code written by the Data Scientist.
  • Analysis and Communication: Demonstrated experience gleaning actionable insights from political data (voter files, field data, polling); ability to communicate clearly in presentations, graphs, and written memos.
  • Dashboards and visuals: Demonstrated experience creating dashboards, a deep understanding of visualization best practices and accessibility.
  • A service oriented approach to data work that prioritizes collaboration, supporting staff and partners, centering equity, and building for the long term.
  • Ability to work irregular campaign style hours and travel as needed, especially during the peak months of the electoral cycle.

Nice to Haves

  • Deeper experience with visualization or user experience design.
  • More advanced knowledge of analytics, data science, or machine learning.
  • Experience automating common analysis workflows or creating visuals programmatically, e.g. via google apps script or similar python APIs.
  • Experience with additional political data sets such as Voter Registration data, Census data, FEC reports, and digital or TV advertising data.
  • Past experience as an organizer or field staffer.

Location

This position can be remote or hybrid and the location is flexible, with a slight preference for candidates based in DC. Some travel and reasonable access to an airport is required. America Votes has offices located in DC and AZ, CO, FL, GA, MI, MN, NC, NH, NV, OH, PA, and WI.

Compensation

The salary for this position will be between $125,000 and $135,000 and depend upon the applicant's experience. America Votes offers a competitive benefits package covering 100% of employee medical, dental, & vision insurance premiums, life insurance, long term disability coverage, monthly cell phone reimbursement, personal professional development funds, parental leave, and 401 (K) after four months of continuous service with the organization.
