Overview

Assemble is a leading digital-first media and public affairs firm that works with candidates, labor unions, companies, and non-profit organizations across the country to shape public opinion and mobilize communities, stakeholders, and supporters. We are looking for a director to help lead our digital advocacy and fundraising work.

Role

You will lead a team that focuses on grassroots advocacy and fundraising, including enlisting and engaging activists in digital advocacy campaigns for issue groups, corporate coalitions, and labor unions, as well as raising money online for advocacy organizations and Democratic political candidates and committees. Your work will span Assemble’s three sectors: corporate and issue advocacy, labor and campaigns & elections. You’ll be Assemble’s primary subject matter expert on grassroots advocacy and fundraising strategies and tools, including email marketing, SMS, and activist and donor acquisition. You’ll lead a team of copywriters and production specialists, managing both their day-to-day work and professional development. You’ll work closely with Assemble leadership and client managers to shape client strategy and manage deliverables from conception to execution. Core areas of expertise include:

  • Grassroots advocacy: Enlist and mobilize activists to take action to support or oppose specific legislative action and policy priorities, including calling and email their representatives.
  • Grassroots fundraising: Raise money for advocacy organizations, Democratic political candidates and committees.
  • Email & SMS marketing: Leverage email & SMS as channels for direct-response and activation.
  • Activist and donor acquisition: Work closely with our paid team to recruit new supporters and action takers, with a focus on cost-per-acquisition and ROI.
  • Team management: Manage a multi-person team, including setting strategic direction, managing workflow and deadlines and mentoring staff.
  • Cross-department collaboration: Work collaboratively with Assemble leadership, client leads and other service team leads to shape client strategy and execution.

Responsibilities

  • Shape Assemble’s grassroots advocacy and fundraising strategies and apply best-in-class practices to our work
  • Provide Assemble leadership and client teams with subject matter expertise and communicate directly with clients and prospective clients when needed
  • Collaborate with Assemble’s paid media, creative and digital communications teams to deliver integrated programs for our clients
  • Manage grassroots advocacy and fundraising staff
  • Manage the department’s workflow, deadlines and client priorities

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of professional experience mobilizing people to take action online. Experience with both advocacy and fundraising campaigns strongly preferred.
  • The ideal candidate has experience working at a digital agency, for-profit company or trade association, or issue advocacy organization. Political fundraising experience is an added plus.
  • Prior experience managing staff.
  • Strong project management skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Creative problem solver who is able to forecast needs, solve problems, generate new ideas and work with team members to execute quickly.
  • Ability to manage deadlines in a high-pressure fast-paced environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interest in working with corporate and trade association clients, in addition to non-profit groups and Democratic political campaigns.
  • Ability to work extended hours if/when needed and comfortable being available outside of normal business hours for urgent requests.

Compensation

Salary Range: $100,000 – $120,000
