Summary:

The Communications Director will lead, coordinate and elevate CADEM’s communications goals, strategy and efforts. The ideal candidate will be an experienced people manager who can lead a team of staff consultants and volunteers. The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal and communication skills and will be strategic, creative and proactive to deliver and drive all the organization’s communications goals, both internal and external. Strong candidates will also have experience in communications, in one or more of these fields: public relations, public affairs, earned media, digital, intercultural communications, and/or campaign management.

The Communications Director plays a key role within CADEM’s senior leadership team and, beyond the organization’s communications goals, will play an integral role in both the fundraising and organizing aspects of CADEM’s work.

Essential Job Functions (including, but not limited to):

  • In partnership with CADEM leadership and organizing team, develop and implement a long-term communications plan that elevates CADEM’s brand and voice, develops key messaging, expands the organization’s reach, and supports the work and goals of the organizing and fundraising departments.
  • Lead and manage a team of staff and consultants towards CADEM’s communication goals, both internally and externally.
  • Lay out a vision and drive the execution plan necessary for any new internal policies or processes that help to carry out the organization’s communication goals.
  • Develop a digital strategy that aims to increase CADEM’s reach and brand visibility, especially with key constituencies within the state, and ensure that the organization’s website and social media platforms are maintained.
  • Oversee, develop and draft the creation and distribution of the organization’s communications content – including a weekly messaging email, rapid response, email communications, digital content, press releases, and statements – and resources to external and internal partners and stakeholders, and with the ability to sometimes do so under tight timelines.
  • Collaborate with the finance department to ensure that messaging, timing and strategies are aligned and result in achieving CADEM’s fundraising goals.
  • Strategize and partner with the organizing department to grow the volunteer base, strengthen partnerships, and ensure success of the organizing department’s goals and overall electoral and political goals of CADEM.
  • Partner with and train internal partners to ensure messaging is aligned and strong across the state, and cultivate relationships with key external stakeholders and elected officials.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Strong commitment to the values and mission of the California Democratic Party.
  • Experience in a principal or senior leadership role that strengthened strategic planning, project management, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to manage sensitive and complex dynamics within a fast-paced environment.
  • At least 5-7 years of management experience, with a preference for management experience within the political, policy, public affairs and/or other relevant fields.
  • At least 3-5 years of communications experience, with a preference for communications experience within the political, policy, public affairs and/or other relevant fields.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to develop written statements and other communications content, review and edit communications materials, and deliver presentations.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to motivate and inspire those around you, and the drive to be creative, innovative and proactive.
  • Working understanding of California’s diverse population and electorate across the state’s many distinct communities, and the skills and experience to communicate effectively to all communities.
  • Experience working collaboratively with elected officials, candidates, community groups, advocates and/or allied organizations.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and responsibilities.
  • Sound judgment and ability to problem-solve amidst complex, sensitive and dynamic issues and stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of California’s political, electoral and legislative processes.
  • High level of personal and professional integrity, and the drive to contribute positively to the team and work environment.
