Summary
American Progress is seeking a Chief of Staff and Vice President who will collaborate closely with the President and CEO to ensure that they effectively fulfill both internal and external commitments to partners, funders, and the board of directors. A successful candidate will be someone who can drive major initiatives, adapt easily to rapidly changing circumstances, manage multiple urgent projects quickly and efficiently, and be willing to work unpredictable hours.
Responsibilities:
- Drive significant CAP initiatives on behalf of the CEO.
- Advise the President and CEO on institutional priorities, leadership decisions, external affairs, policy, public and media appearances, and other issues.
- Direct cross-institutional projects and represent the interests of the President and CEO to internal and external stakeholders, managing relationships with external organizations and offices.
- Oversee the President and CEO’s approval and briefing processes, including review of policy work and institutional decisions, preparation for events and media appearances, and more.
- Work with policy leads, including department heads, to manage the CEO’s policy activities, coordinating the development and rollout of major policy initiatives.
- Work with the Chief Operating Officer to recruit senior hires, including policy staff and members of the Executive team.
- Execute special projects assigned across a broad range of functions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Ten or more years of relevant experience with a proven track record of supporting organizations and principals, especially in government, policy, or politics.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience thriving in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
- Outstanding presentation, written, and oral communications skills.
- Ability to regularly work outside standard hours to attend events and handle urgent matters on nights and weekends.
- Ability to both handle and deliver on multiple important priorities at one time.
- Exemplary leadership, time management, organizational, and analytical skills.
- An entrepreneurial spirit—a hard worker, self-starter, and problem-solver.
