Position Title: Director of Digital Campaigns
Position Location: Candidates are welcome to apply from across the U.S. Those that are near a Popular Democracy office in DC or Brooklyn may be asked to work from the office one or two days/week if necessary. Applicants outside of those areas may be required to travel to a Popular Democracy office occasionally.
Popular Democracy is seeking a Director of Digital Campaigns to join the Communications and Narrative Department. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Popular Democracy works to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We work with 50 affiliates in 34 states and DC to build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations that envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.
About the Position:
We are seeking a Director of Digital Campaigns to lead the development and execution of digital organizing strategies that advance Popular Democracy’s Fightback campaigns and build long-term power. This role will lead a team that designs and runs digital campaigns that integrate online and offline tactics to recruit members, raise funds, and drive political action. The Director will also work closely with affiliates and staff to strengthen the organization’s overall digital capacity, equipping our network with the tools and strategies needed to win campaigns and organize at scale.
It is expected that the Director of Digital Campaigns will travel and attend in-person trainings, meetings, and actions with Popular Democracy affiliates and partners approximately 1-2 times a month.
We estimate that candidates will have about 15 years of relevant experience, but our review of candidates for this role will focus on whether they can fill the needs of the position, not years of experience.
The Director of Digital Campaigns will supervise two Senior Digital Campaigns Managers and a Senior Digital Content Producer and will report to the Chief of Communications and Narrative.
Primary Responsibilities:
The Director of Digital Campaigns will:
- Lead a digital campaigns team and strategy that:
- Responds rapidly to what’s happening in the world;
- Uses strategic moments to build momentum and base;
- Helps people make sense of what’s happening and gives them something to do;
- Provides people with the tools, knowledge and skills to grow their impact;
- Moves people recruited online into offline actions and events; and
- Scales our impact through distributed tactics.
- Instill a culture of experimentation and evaluation to encourage new and innovative approaches to digital organizing and generate best practices that can be disseminated across our organization and network.
- Monitor political, media, and cultural trends to identify strategic opportunities for proactive storytelling and rapid response.
- Support and guide affiliates in digital strategy and engagement, including online to offline recruitment and expansion into targeted areas.
- Expand and deepen internal and external partnerships that help us reach new audiences within our target base.
- Develop a system for maintaining a digital calendar to manage flow of social media, email, SMS, blog and other digital content.
- Provide coaching, strategic guidance, and training to Popular Democracy staff and the network.
- Support fundraising efforts as needed, including providing background information and materials and/or participating in relevant meetings with donors or donor forums.
- Other related duties as needed and assigned.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- 3-5 years in a leadership and/or management role with demonstrated success in leading collaborative projects.
- Demonstrated ability to craft messages and produce clear, compelling digital materials that tackle complex issues for wide audiences.
- Experience managing and executing digital strategies across several channels and an understanding of digital organizing and marketing trends.
- A creative, open, and innovative mind energetically searching for new solutions.
- Ability to anticipate needs and plan accordingly, problem-solve, coordinate complex activities, prioritize multiple demands, and meet deadlines with high attention to detail, accuracy and quality.
- Strong, self-directed work ethic.
- Demonstrated organizational and project management skills.
- A management approach that is positive and collaborative, driven by values, accountability, teamwork, and creativity.
- Strong racial equity analysis and experience in communicating about Black, brown and working communities.
- Written and spoken proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
- A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep understanding of challenges facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, communities of color, disabled people, LGBTQ+ folks, and people at the intersections of the above communities.
Candidates should expect to participate in two rounds of group interviews and a job simulation exercise. Final candidates will be asked to provide references.
Salary and Benefits:
Popular Democracy is a unionized workplace. This is a supervisory position, not included in our bargaining unit. Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years of experience, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $126,500-$136,500.
We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days your first year, 12 sick days per year, additional PTO, including holidays, and contributions to individuals’ 401K plans.
