Democratic Socialists of America (501c4) is a member-run socialist organization with 200 chapters nationwide engaged in movement-building, public education, direct action, advocacy, and electoral politics. Our immediate goal is to build working-class power against the capitalist class while advancing transformative reforms like a Green New Deal, supporting a robust labor movement, electing socialists to office, and shifting the public framing around capitalism and democratic socialism. DSA is a “big tent,” multi-tendency organization that welcomes everyone committed to democracy and socialism.

The New York City Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA) is seeking an Organizing Coordinator to support and manage the administrative responsibilities of the organization. This position is an ongoing full-time position. The Organizing Coordinator is responsible for building chapter membership, fundraising, administration, and the day-to-day operations of the chapter. They coordinate members, leaders, and resources to meet annual objectives, multi-year fundraising goals, and implement the democratic decisions of our members. Additionally, they support the chapter through fundraising, office management, administration, and support electoral compliance.



Duties/Responsibilities

  • Chapter meetings and democracy
  • Attend all Steering Committee meetings (one night a week in the evening, alternating remote and in person) and all Citywide Leadership Committee meetings (in person, every four to eight weeks for four hours on a Saturday)
  • Manage the administration of our biannual chapter convention
  • Learn & manage all voting tools: DSA Voting tool, Opavote, and Loomio
  • Learn to set up & manage hybrid tech setup for meetings
  • Membership
    • Lead initiatives to recruit new members, retain members, and increase membership engagement
    • Work with the membership committee and steering committee to ensure chapter-wide integration of membership development
    • Devise membership development strategies for the steering committee to review
    • Monitor and report on key membership measurements to ensure chapter leadership is informed and engaged
  • Finance
    • Work with the chapter treasurer to ensure bookkeeping and payments are executed in a timely and organized manner
    • Support the treasurer in communicating best spending practices to the chapter
    • Support the treasurer and others in financial administration
  • Fundraising
    • Attend all fundraising committee meetings
    • Support and co-chair the fundraising committee with the treasurer
      • Work with the treasurer to maintain the fundraising calendar
      • Support committee with planning, staffing, and sending communications for chapter fundraisers
      • Coordinate with the communications committee to ensure proper promotion of fundraisers
    • Manage all local dues and support membership committee with local dues drives
      • Provide regular membership and financial updates to chapter leaders
  • Electoral Compliance
    • Attend all compliance meetings and support all compliance activity in the chapter
    • Monitor compliance within the chapter as needed
  • Office management (for either the Manhattan office at 14 Jefferson Street or a potential new Brooklyn office)
    • Office maintenance, security, and chairing the office committee
  • Support volunteers to book spaces for meetings and events across the city
  • Merchandise management and strategy
  • Manage all subscriptions for software used by chapter
  • Manage chapter document storage and organization

Qualifications

  • Experience in organizing meetings, managing documents, and setting up tech for hybrid meetings.
  • Basic bookkeeping, budget management, and tax preparation experience, preferably for a non-profit organization.
  • Experience planning and promoting fundraising programs, especially events, dues drives, and annual fundraising drives.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn basic electoral compliance processes.
  • Experience in maintaining office spaces and managing supplies.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Experience using Action Network.
