Job Summary

Elias Law Group LLP is a mission driven law firm, dedicated to helping Democrats win, citizens vote, and progressives make change, with offices in Washington, D.C. and Seattle, Washington. We are currently seeking to hire a Political Law Paralegal in our Washington, D.C. office reporting directly to the Senior Director of Legal Operations.

Under general supervision from the Senior Director of Legal Operations and all attorneys in the Political Law practice, this individual will be responsible for performing an array of work for clients that include Democratic party committees, PACs, political candidates, federal and non-federal political campaigns, and 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations.

A successful applicant will be an exceptional oral and written communicator and will be adept at prioritizing multiple projects across competing deadlines. This role requires a heightened ability to maintain positive and productive contact with attorneys, staff members, and clients while observing confidentiality of client matters. Proven research skills, sound judgement, and a deep interest in politics and elections are key indicators of an ability to succeed within the role. A successful Political Law Paralegal will also have the ability to quickly problem-solve, creatively utilize their resources, and will be comfortable taking on new tasks.

Compensation

Expect a base hourly rate ranging from $31.25 - $38.46 depending on experience.

Essential Job Functions

  • Work closely alongside political law attorneys to support the election programming of political campaigns and party committees. This support can include conducting federal and state campaign finance research, searching court records, tracking election dates and deadlines, and other client-specific research questions that arise.
  • Vet donors and potential staff members for various types of political committees and nonprofits.
  • Conduct in-depth research to prepare federal and non-federal campaigns for issues regarding ballot access, voter registration, vote-by-mail, and recounts.
  • Provide rapid post-election recount, audit, and contest support to attorneys and clients; support litigation efforts as needed.
  • Design, edit and proofread legal briefings, memos and PowerPoints to create work product that is visually coherent and grammatically sound.
  • Support the practices of all political law attorneys and manage multiple responsibilities at once with competing deadlines.
  • Maintain and organize client and project matter files.
  • Review and proofread memos and filings; utilize Blue Book for cite checking.
  • Work collaboratively with other paralegals to divide tasks and proactively address coverage gaps among the firm’s priorities.
  • Coordinate with attorneys on external training webinars with clients, create invites, and keep track of RSVP lists.
  • File client documents with state regulatory agencies as well as the Federal Election Commission, Internal Revenue Service, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Coordinate the filing of documents through the use of third-party services on a tight time schedule.
  • Develop new tactics and systems for client record maintenance.
  • Assist with other client and firm administrative projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree, excellent organization and prioritization skills and show an enthusiasm for all phases of the political and election law process.
  • Paralegal experience, preferably within a law firm environment.
  • Experience working in Democratic politics and political campaigns is a plus.
  • Fluency in the various Microsoft Office applications is essential to this role, and experience using PACER, Westlaw, and other legal search engines is very helpful.
  • The ability to work additional hours beyond the normal schedule may be required, especially around relevant election dates. Some infrequent travel is required.
  • Thrive within a diverse and close-knit team and must be willing to think creatively and innovate.
  • Must be responsive and show initiative.

Work Environment

  • Position will operate on a hybrid schedule in a professional office environment and is expected to work in office three (3) days a week (currently set as Tues/Wed/Thur).
  • Position routinely uses standard office equipment.
  • Position requires that the employee be able to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.

Physical Demands

  • This position is primarily a sedentary position. However, some duties and responsibilities may require the employee to lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, occasionally move about to access office equipment, file cabinets, etc.
  • May require employee to carry or lift items weighing up to 10 pounds.
