The role:

At FSG, Consultants are integral members of our consulting team. This is a generalist position and Consultants will be assigned to projects across FSG’s areas of expertise, working with our corporate and foundation clients. When fully staffed, Senior Consultants work on two client projects simultaneously in addition to contributing to firmwide activities ~15% of the time.

Senior Consultants begin as individual contributors often leading complex workstreams on a client case team. They work towards serving as case team leaders, responsible for the project management of FSG’s consulting engagements. As a case team leader, Senior Consultants manage stakeholder engagement and are the client’s main point of contact. They also manage a team internally, create and manage the workplan, and oversee the content development of rigorous and innovative solutions to deliver on FSG’s scopes of work.

What you’ll do:

Roughly 85% of your time will be spent on client projects, working both autonomously and collaboratively as part of your case teams. Your work will include, but not be limited to, the following activities and expectations to create value for our clients and to advance equitable systems change.

Note that the following is related to your initial role as a case team member (integral parts of a case team leader role which would be a transition once more tenured at FSG would be: project management, client management, team management, and leadership for content development):

Conduct Research, Perform Analysis, and Generate Insights

    • Own and project manage complex workstreams, relating your work to the central question of the project and vice versa
    • Design effective research plans to answer key questions the client has
    • Conduct comprehensive desk research and/or primary research (designing and conducting interviews; designing surveys)
    • Synthesize research findings, and conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis
    • Translate findings into meaningful client recommendations that are easy to understand

Develop Client Deliverables

    • Develop structured and persuasive deliverables related to workstream and beyond by using stories, conceptual frameworks, and bringing in appropriate quantitative and qualitative data
    • Create visually appealing and clear presentations in Powerpoint and written materials (e.g., reports, memos) in Word
    • Write concisely and accurately

Interact with Clients and Stakeholders

    • Contribute to team thinking about strategy for client influence, and how to implement this strategy through the development of deliverables and client interaction
    • Design virtual and in-person meetings and workshops that engage participants and elicit input from diverse groups of stakeholders utilizing a variety of facilitation methods
    • Engage with clients and stakeholders in regular check-ins and more significant touchpoints, e.g., workshops, according to plan for client management
    • Deliver compelling and engaging presentations and facilitate large group discussions with clients or stakeholders
    • Build relationships with clients as you help them to achieve their social impact goals
    • Assist with logistics for planning external meetings and workshops

At FSG, everyone contributes to organizational learning, development, and culture, including creating an inclusive work environment. The remaining 15% of your time is spent on organizational development efforts, such as but not limited to:

  • Participating in and preparing for organizational and learning calls
  • Contributing to research and writing for publications or planning for webinars
  • Support business development (e.g., proposal drafting, support for outreach)
  • Interviewing candidates for recruiting efforts
  • Furthering your professional development

    • Apply knowledge of applicable frameworks and theories (e.g., systems change, targeted universalism)

What you bring:

  • 5+ years of professional experience (may include relevant experience as part of a graduate degree program) with transferable skills to role responsibilities above
  • Demonstrated commitment to our mission of social change; experience working in the social sector preferred
  • Prior experience in consulting or client services preferred, with experience managing project workstreams
  • Ability to travel domestically or internationally up to ~25% of the time
