FSG is a global nonprofit driven by the belief that every person has the right to live in a fair, just and equitable society that provides opportunities for growth, advancement, and fulfillment. At FSG, we work towards this future by addressing the systems and structures that can unlock health equity, climate justice, and economic mobility.

Founded in 2000 by Professor Michael E. Porter of Harvard Business School and Mark Kramer, FSG began its work advising the world’s leading philanthropic organizations on how to best leverage their resources to improve lives around the world. We have partnered with a range of foundations, including private, community, family, corporate, and health conversion foundations, to develop organizational strategy, conduct evaluation, and build cross-sector coalition development or strategy. Our work is often place-based and seeks to create fair and just opportunities for well-being at the community level. Initiatives such as Collective Impact Forum, Talent Rewire and GLOW help us deliver this local impact.

As FSG’s influence and impact increased, we evolved our efforts to include advising corporations beyond their philanthropic strategies, fueled by the introduction of shared value in 2011. For more than a decade, FSG has been providing consulting services for CSR, ESG, and shared value efforts to some of the largest companies around the world. This body of work is driven by the fundamental belief that business and society are mutually dependent, and the private sector plays a pivotal role in addressing some of society’s most pressing problems and can do so in a way that creates competitive advantage for the company and sustainable change for society.

Today, FSG is led by John Harper, who took the CEO role in January 2024. He is a visionary, trusted and exceptional people-centered leader with deep experience advancing equity. He brings a commitment to equitable systems change and a strong intersectional approach to the work as he leads FSG in its next chapter of social impact.

FSG has operations in the US and India. The US has offices in Boston, MA, and Washington, DC, with most of its staff working remotely. The India team is based in Mumbai, where FSG has an office.

We are structured into four Impact Units (IU) and Central Operations. The four IUs are: US Consulting, Talent Rewire, Collective Impact Forum, and Asia.

Chief of Staff and Director of Strategic Initiatives

Location: Remote | Anywhere within the 48 contiguous United States

Salary Range: $179,102 - $196,816

Who we are:

We are a blend of consultants, strategists, issue area experts, facilitators, and operations professionals who partner with foundations, corporations, nonprofits and other changemakers united by a vision of a world where social group identities no longer predict life outcomes.

Our work is grounded in respect, curiosity, a humble learner stance, and a commitment to being in relationship with the problem and the people and community it impacts. We work alongside our partners and create impact through influence and curating safe and generative spaces that unleash creativity, potential, and the answers that lie within. We progress productive dialogue into tangible action and positive outcomes.

While we seek to shift systemic conditions, we also continue our own journey at FSG to live into this vision of the world internally—working each day to get one step closer. We hope every new hire will help advance us on this journey.

The role:

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Chief of Staff (CoS) and Director of Strategic Initiatives will be an integral member of the senior leadership team, acting as a strategic thought partner, integrator, internal communicator, enabler, and confidant. The CoS and Director will provide leverage and support to the CEO, organizational leadership, and staff across the firm, serving as a central node for information synthesis and process improvements that facilitate leadership decision-making and management of organizational time and resources.

The CoS and Director will provide oversight of the following functions to ensure alignment with FSG’s overall strategy and that the functional leaders who are responsible for day-to-day operations have the guidance of a strategic thought partner:

  • Finance
  • Contracts, Compliance and Risk Management
  • IT and Systems Security

Who you are:

You are a collaborative and thoughtful leader who thrives on enabling complex organizations to succeed and understands the importance of advancing and operationalizing a shared vision to maximize an organization’s impact. You feel comfortable flexing your leadership style to suit the situation and can effectively lead mainly from the side and back. You are a natural connector, able to synthesize complex information, and surface the choices that need to be considered by leadership. You take pride in being discreet, objectively sharing the work of others, facilitating discussions with internal stakeholders to clear outcomes, and being an influencer. You have strong managerial experience including leading other people managers, strong strategic acumen, solid financial acuity, and have been a leader of multiple functions–functions where you may not yourself have deep expertise. You are a proven leader in a remote environment and can work across diverse, global cultures. You are able to build a followership not based on your title but because of how you lead.

What you’ll do:

As a key thought partner to the CEO and senior leaders across the firm, you’ll spend 60% of your time driving transformative initiatives, serving as the central node for information synthesis, and championing process improvements that align with the firm’s mission. You will provide backbone support for key leadership bodies and serve as Clerk (AKA “Secretary”) for the FSG Board of Directors (upon Board approval), helping to drive alignment across leadership groups, enable effective decision-making, and monitor organizational progress and impact.

The other 40% of your time will focus on guiding and empowering high-functioning teams across three key departments (Finance, Compliance and IT). Specifically, you’ll be responsible for managing three direct reports (2 in the U.S and 1 in Turkey). You will provide strategic advice, foster collaboration, and create an environment where innovation thrives.
