About the role:
The political associate will support the Indivisible Political Department in a wide variety of areas, including research, correspondence, electoral analysis and presentations, candidate vetting, administrative and scheduling support, and support across department functionalities.
Ideal candidates will be able to independently manage a wide range of projects, manage multiple deadlines, demonstrate excellent communication, oral and written abilities, work across teams seamlessly, and respond quickly to developing news and program updates. This role is suited for individuals with strong research and writing skills, a good understanding of current political dynamics, and an eagerness to learn.
This position will report to the Deputy Political Director and will work closely with other Political Department staff and Indivisible teams to execute our electoral programming and more. A dedication to equity, inclusion, and social justice is essential for this role.
This is a full-time, short-term assignment anticipated to end on or before December 31, 2026. The salary for this position is $57,000 to $67,700 annually, and the role is expected to require 40 hours of work per week.
What you'll do:
PROGRAM SUPPORT 40%
- Work with senior department staff to develop and review messaging and talking points for electoral priorities, including drafting persuasion and voter turnout scripts for various DVC methods.
- Support the department’s external communication with groups, campaigns and partner organizations, including external correspondence, scheduling, and logistics.
- Liaise with other departments to collect and report information about group activity related to electoral campaigns and ballot initiatives.
- Assisting the development of electoral messaging documents, such as providing research and reviewing talking points for use in internal and external communications.
- Managing the candidate vetting process in support of multiple departmental programs, including the national endorsements program.
- Developing and maintaining a tracker for the national endorsement program, monitoring each stage of the endorsement process, and providing updates to departmental staff.
- Managing correspondence with candidates, campaigns, and other external partners on the department’s behalf, including support for contact inbox teams.
- Manage political program-specific spending programs, including but not limited to reimbursements, upfront spending, and bulk spending requests.
POLITICAL RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS 40%
- Work with political staff to research and analyze elections across the country.
- Independently conduct background research on key issues and candidates in support of critical political programs, such as the national endorsement program.
- Conducting research and collecting data for key states, including: polling data, election results, demographic breakdown, candidate information, campaign finance data, legislative partisan control, and ballot initiatives.
- Developing a system for tracking and reporting press coverage about key electoral and political campaign developments and providing periodic polling updates for priority races across campaigns.
DEPARTMENT SUPPORT 20%
- Provide critical administrative support to the political department at large, including managing department expenses in collaboration with the Deputy Political Director, independently managing department scheduling, arranging department travel, coordinating department retreat logistics, and maintaining department subscriptions.
- Developing ongoing systems for tracking departmental activity and relevant external data, including major political news stories, programmatic developments, and key performance indicators for departmental goals, and providing regular updates to the team.
- Fact-checking reports and memos for the Political team and other teams as needed.
- Representing the political department in cross-team meetings.
- Review and approve a range of cross-team support programs, including Distributed Fundraising requests, as well as post card and VAN requests.
- Independently managing department contracts, invoices, payments, expense tracking/coding, and monthly financials, coordinating with other department staff as needed. Independently managing departmental scheduling and logistics for internal and external meetings and events, including departmental travel.
Qualifications:
- Strong attention to detail and highly organized.
- Excellent research and writing skills.
- High proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of our fast-paced, dynamic team.
- Adaptability and flexibility in a rapid-paced campaigns environment.
- A commitment to progressive organizing and grassroots movement building.
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous campaign or political experience.
- Familiarity with VAN and other electoral tools.
- Familiarity with digital media and civic engagement tools.
- Knowledge of Census data, campaign finance and Secretary of State reporting, and media monitoring.
- Previous experience with scheduling, expense management, and/or other administrative responsibilities.
