The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) is seeking a National Coordinator to work in the union’s Public Services and Health Care Division.

Beyond freight drivers and warehouse workers, the Teamsters represent workers in virtually every occupation imaginable – from airline pilots to zookeepers, and nearly everything in between.

Position Description

Under the general supervision of the Director and/or Assistant Director of the Public Services & Health Care Division, or designee, the National Coordinator oversees the planning and implementation of various programs and strategies to ensure optimum efficiency and effectiveness are achieved in pursuit of division goals.

The position is based in Washington, DC. Candidates must be available to work in-person, full-time at DC headquarters.

This position’s day-to-day work will include the activities below:

  • Assists the Division Director in shaping national programs, policies, and priorities to ensure results are consistent with established organizational objectives and goals.
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of programs and projects alongside the Division Director, representatives of Teamster Local Unions & Joint Councils, relevant IBT staff, or outside allied organizations.
  • Drafts materials for diverse audiences (written and otherwise) for internal and external use (flyers, video scripts, brochures, training materials, etc.)
  • Plans and executes meetings, trainings and conferences, both physical and digital, including working with IBT Departments and Teamster Local Unions on planning, logistics, and content for these meetings.
  • Works alongside other IBT Departments in a team environment when assisting Teamster Local Unions or Joint Councils on specific projects that promote Division growth and effective representation of members.
  • Utilizes critical thinking skills in coordinating projects or campaigns with various stakeholders, finding balance and agreement among competing priorities and interests.
  • Assists in preparing the Division’s budget; conducts the Division’s budgetary review process, monitors expenses and prepares budgets for special projects as necessary.
  • Provides confidential administrative support for the Director and the General President’s Office, as instructed and required.
  • Submits travel expenses in a timely and accurate fashion in accordance with IBT policies.
  • Participates and represents the IBT on round tables and coalitions with other allied organizations.
  • Develops policies and procedures for Division administrative processes.
  • Assists in the hiring, evaluation, counseling and termination of Division employees, and effectively recommends, as necessary.
  • Adheres to all Division and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities as related to the position or assigned to by the Director, Public Services Division or designee.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Detailed knowledge of the structure of labor unions and the current landscape of the labor movement required.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Teams, Outlook and Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Two to four years’ experience in a research and/or development department with demonstrated skills in legal research required.
  • Two to four years’ experience in a labor union required.
  • Experience with public speaking to diverse audiences in multiple settings (trainings, conferences, etc.).
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle demanding work schedule and highly stressful situations.
  • Ability to act independently, identify and assess problems, devise contingency plans and implement courses of action.
  • Ability to travel as required.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $100,000. The IBT offers a robust benefits package including a 100% employer-paid health and welfare plan, vacation and sick leave, pension, FICA reimbursement, and 401(k) option.

The Teamsters headquarters building offers all employees access to a subsidized cafeteria, two onsite gyms, and protected bike parking. The building is only a 10-minute walk from Union Station in Washington, DC. Personal vehicle parking is not provided but paid garages are nearby.
