Job Title: Communications Coordinator

Reports to: Communications Director

Job Status: Full-Time, Salary Exempt

Salary Range: $52,000-$60,000 DOE

Arizona Center for Empowerment (ACE), is a community-led and driven organization committed to raising new leadership in Arizona through confronting the most pressing needs of its often underserved communities. Its sister organization, Living United for Change in Arizona (LUCHA), is an organization led by changemakers fighting for social, racial, and economic transformation.

Born in response to SB 1070 and the rising anti-immigrant sentiment in Arizona and across the nation, LUCHA has since defeated the architects of SB 1070, elected progressives to the highest offices in the state, won crucial legislative races, and helped pass life-changing ballot initiatives such as raising the minimum wage, providing earned sick time for millions of Arizonans, and Prop 308. We have also played a key role in defeating Trump in 2020, flipping Arizona Blue, and registering tens of thousands of new voters every election cycle. This multifaceted position encompasses four primary areas: Community Engagement Coordination, Internal Communications Coordination, Advocacy/Policy and Communications Specialization.

What You'll Do:

Managing Electoral Communications Strategy

  • Working with the Communications Director you will help manage electoral communications efforts that include:

  • Messaging and Content Creation

  • Managing Campaign Messaging

  • Content Writing: support with some speech writing, press releases, social media posts, email newsletters, and other LUCHA Blue campaign materials.

  • Media Relations

  • Press Outreach: Manage relationships with journalists, reporters, and media outlets.

  • Press Releases: Draft and distribute press releases to ensure media coverage of campaign events and announcements.

  • Press Conferences: Support & manage press conferences and media events.

  • Spokesperson: Assisting the Communications Director in serving as a spokesperson on behalf of LUCHA & ACE

  • Being comfortable on camera and conducting interviews on behalf of the organization

  • Internal Communication

  • Team Coordination: Coordinate communication efforts with other members of the electoral team: including the field team, political team, and executive team

  • Information Dissemination: Ensure that all team members are informed about key messages, campaign updates, and strategies.

  • Monitoring and Analysis

  • Media Monitoring: Track media coverage and analyze the impact of LUCHA Blue Campaign messaging.

  • Crisis Management

  • Implement crisis communication plans to address any negative publicity or unexpected issues.

  • Rapid Response: Respond quickly to negative stories or misinformation to mitigate damage.

  • Partnerships

  • Assist in building relationships with key stakeholders, including community leaders, organizations, and influencers.

  • Ethical Standards

  • Maintain high ethical standards in all communication practices to uphold the integrity of the organization

  • Innovation and Trends

  • Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest trends and technologies in political communication and incorporate innovative strategies into the campaign.

Community Engagement

  • Cultivate and nurture strong relationships with community partners, volunteers, and supporters in both English and Spanish to mobilize grassroots support for our organization's mission.

  • Organize and execute events, outreach activities, and community engagement initiatives, leveraging bilingual skills to reach diverse audiences effectively.

  • Implement strategies to expand our outreach within Spanish-speaking communities and promote inclusivity.

Internal Communications

  • Facilitate effective communication channels among staff, board members, and volunteers, utilizing English and Spanish to ensure alignment with our organization's goals and values.

  • Coordinate staff meetings, events, and workshops, fostering collaboration and community within the organization with bilingual support.

Advocacy/Policy Communications

  • Expand and Implement comprehensive communication strategies in both English and Spanish to advance our advocacy goals and influence public policy decisions.

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify advocacy priorities and messaging strategies, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.

  • Utilize experience in politics, advocacy work, and the nonprofit sector to inform communication strategies and outreach efforts.

Other responsibilities

  • Compose correspondence, prepare presentations, reports, and other adhoc assignments, such as Google Slide presentations, collection, analysis, and summary of information using Google Sheets or other Google Suite programs.

  • Timely distributes business communications

  • Protect the integrity of confidential information in all matters.

  • Some translation services (English to Spanish)

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish Preferred

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in communications

  • Minimum 1-2 campaign/community organizing cycles (or 1-2 years) experience.

  • Preferred: 2 to 4 degree in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, or relevant experience/training.

  • Proven experience in community engagement, event planning, and outreach activities, with a focus on bilingual communication.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, utilizing both languages effectively.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish, with attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Experience in politics, advocacy work, and the nonprofit sector, with a deep understanding of the dynamics involved.

  • Ability to develop and execute communication strategies that effectively drive advocacy and social change.

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Passion for social justice, equity, and making a positive impact in the community.
