Back from the Brink (BftB): Bringing Communities Together to Abolish Nuclear Weapons is a U.S.based grassroots coalition -
www.preventnuclearwar.org - running a U.S.based national advocacy and public education campaign to prevent nuclear war and abolish nuclear
weapons seeks an experienced, mid-career organizer/campaign professional to serve as Director of Outreach & Organizing (DO&O). The
DO&O‘s primary focus and responsibility will be to significantly grow and diversify the campaign’s volunteer/activist base and its nationwide network
of community-based organizing hubs.
The DO&O will serve on a four-member, senior Executive Management Team responsible for the overall strategic direction and day-to-day
operations of the coalition. This is a new, full-time, remote, benefited position on the staff of Physicians for Social Responsibility - Los Angeles (BftB’s fiscal agent). This individual will report to PSR-LA’s Associate Director and the Coalition’s senior advisor/consultant who serves as manager of Partnerships & Communications
Specific Responsibilities:
● Develop and execute strategies to significantly grow the coalition’s email list, supporter/activist base and cultivate new contacts into becoming BftB
activists and donors, prioritizing specific targeted constituencies important to the coalition’s effort to build political influence and power.
● Play a lead role in developing strategies and tactics to significantly increase the number of BftB organizing hubs throughout the country, prioritizing politically important states and congressional districts.
● Co-manage the day-to-day operations and decision making of the coalition as a member of the BftB Executive Management Team.
● Co-manage and facilitate the coalition’s Organizing and Outreach Committee.
● Supervise the coalition’s National Field Organizer and other outreach staff/hires.
● Collaborate with the Manager of Partnerships & Communications to
○ engage the supporters and activists of the coalition’s 465 endorsing and partner organizations
○ cultivate leadership and support from over 400 local and state elected officials who have endorsed the campaign.
○ Identify and engage high-profile validators (e.g. celebrities, public intellectuals, artists, musicians, writers, etc.)
● Serve on the coalition’s Communications Committee and work directly with team members to develop and execute email, traditional and social media and other marketing initiatives to further outreach and organizing goals and achieve desired outcomes.
Qualifications/Experience:
● 5-7 years of working directly on local, state or national issue advocacy or a political campaign in a field/grassroots organizing position, with supervisory experience and success recruiting and managing activists and/or volunteers.
● Strong experience with project management and working collaboratively with diverse teams in a remote environment.
● Significant knowledge of the U.S. political system and federal policy making, as well as some understanding of U.S. foreign and defense policy.
● Strong commitment to international cooperation and diplomacy, progressive values, social change and movement building, with an ability to work with and mobilize people and constituencies from across the political spectrum.
● Compelling, clear and respectful writing and verbal communications and interpersonal skills, workplace professionalism, and the ability to maintain
strong, positive and respectful professional relationships.
● Strong commitment to and belief in achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.
Location: Remote, position may require travel a few times/year.
Employment status: Exempt and Full time
Compensation & Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $90,000-$110,000 annually. BftB offers a robust benefits package that includes: 100% employer-paid platinum healthcare, dental, vision, Life Insurance, chiropractic, and acupuncture for employees, spouses, and dependents. We have 13 paid holidays, 10+ days paid days off at the end of the year in addition to 2 weeks PTO. We offer professional development, a $100 a month internet stipend, and a one-time $500 home office set-up stipend.
