Job Summary:

2025 Virginia House Democratic Caucus Communications Director

The Virginia House Democratic Caucus (VHDC) seeks a Communications Director to help promote the overall messaging strategy of the Virginia House Democratic Caucus. The Communications Director will help manage the implementation of the communications strategy of the Caucus. They will work under the direction of the Executive Director to promote the goals of the VHDC to drive messaging & the accomplishments of Democratic Delegates in Virginia. They will engage in strategic communications planning, assisting Delegates & battleground candidates with press inquiries and act as a spokesperson for the VHDC. They will grow and maintain relationships with the local, state and national press while working with relevant stakeholders to continue to communicate on the work being done by Democratic Delegates & Candidates to protect and expand our House Majority.

The start date for this role is ** ASAP**. This is an** in-person** position, based in Richmond, VA, reporting to the Executive Director and** termed through December 31 st, 2025.**

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Executive Director and caucus leadership to develop and execute a proactive, multi-faceted communications strategy that includes both traditional and new media.

  • Help oversee the VHDC’s daily press outreach to include but not limited to drafting and editing external communications, social media copy, media clips, talking points, scripts, press releases, and op-eds.

  • Assist as needed with creation of Caucus + member social media graphics

  • Maintain a calendar of upcoming events and moments to highlight through social media and other external communications.

  • Identify rapid response opportunities and work with staff to implement them.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with members of the media in Virginia.

  • Serve as a point of contact for reporters and members of the media, and speak on the record on behalf of the Caucus.

  • Assist with press conferences and other earned media events.

  • Maintain and update media lists.

  • Drive the Caucus’ earned media efforts through dynamic story pitching.

  • Support the implementation of the Communications plan to include but not limited to researching members and legislation.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1-3 paid/unpaid work in political, advocacy, and/or campaign operations and communications.

  • Previous on-the-record and off-the-record experience with the media.

  • Strong on-the-record confidence

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including attention to detail and positive attitude.

  • Excellent personal skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships.

  • Willingness to travel throughout Virginia, as needed.

  • Willingness to work extensive hours, including nights and weekends (as needed).

  • Ties to Virginia are welcomed, but not required

Compensation:

  • Salary range for this position is $6,500-$8,000 a month, depending on qualifications and experience. All Caucus staff are provided with a full health care benefits package, including vision and dental.
