JOB DESCRIPTION

Sunrise Movement is hiring for a full-time Distributed Organizer. The Distributed Organizer is responsible for helping run and win our campaign(s) and grow our movement’s base across race and class, with an emphasis on HBCUs.

They primarily do this by creating opportunities for mass participation in our campaigns and running a leadership development program that recruits young people – particularly Black, latine, working class, poor, and teenagers – into the movement and enables them to start organizing in their communities, forming Sunrise Hubs in their schools and municipalities.

Core Responsibilities

Design, build, and run a new hubs program for new organizers - [50%]

Past examples of similar programs include: Strike Circles 1 & 2, Wide Awake Leadership Program, Green New Deal Circles, Green New Deal for Schools Program, New Hubs Program

  • Set program goals, structure, duration, and narrative.

  • Recruit participants across race and class, with an emphasis on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

  • Design and build program materials (i.e. handbook, toolkit, templates, etc).

  • Train new organizers in Sunrise DNA, guiding policy, & the basic organizing skills (i.e. 1:1s, action planning, storytelling, building teams, etc) they need to succeed with live online trainings, video training content, and/or in person trainings.

  • Coach participants.

  • Track participation and outcomes in collaboration with the data team.

  • Provide support (monetary, supplies, emotional, etc) for participants throughout their journey.

  • Collaborate across multiple teams to ensure strong, strategic, and nimble organizing.

Build and develop teams of volunteer leaders to help run the program and coach participants - [25%]

  • Recruit a multi racial and cross class team of volunteer coaches.

  • Set team(s) purpose, structure, rhythms, and roles.

  • Manage, coach, train, and support team leaders and members.

  • Design, launch and coach teams that get stronger over time, contribute to the growth and learning of team members and deliver excellent work.

Ad hoc and varied campaign division responsibilities - [25%]

  • Maintain our peer to peer texting tool and enable staff and movement members to use it

  • Recruit to and hold on the ground roles for centralized mobilizations and actions.

  • Support new hubs on the ground and remotely to plan and execute birddogs and direct actions confronting campaign targets.

  • Help design and run national days / weeks of distributed action.

  • Help design and run distributed voter engagement to execute electoral dimensions of our strategy.

Requirements:

  • 2 years of experience building out and supporting volunteer teams, which includes experience in building out or being on multiracial cross class team.

  • 1 year of experience of campaigning (issue-based or electoral) on a national, regional, or local level.

  • Commitment to and excitement about running the national campaign that the campaign team develops and the Sunrise delegate body passes.

  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects, teams, etc at the same time.

  • Commitment to the vision of the Green New Deal.

  • Experience organizing with and supporting high school students.

  • Commitment to growth and learning.

  • Willing to travel nationally approximately 4-6 times per year.

Nice to have, but not necessary:

  • Experience working on or participating in a distributed organizing program, particularly one of Sunrise’s past circle style hub seeding programs

  • Experience in a leadership role in a Sunrise Movement hub

  • Experience with and ability to use multiple digital/distributed organizing tools and platforms (Every Action, Mobilize, AirTable, Scale to Win, New/Mode, Turbophonebank, etc)
