The Associate Director, Digital Content is a senior member of the communications team and leads social media strategy for the organization, and manages online communications projects and campaigns. This person supervises the Social Media Manager and their workload and provides actionable feedback to ensure professional growth.

The Associate Director, Digital Content is responsible for working across teams to ensure cohesion of messaging and efficient workflow across social media, grassroots email, and SMS programs, juggling multiple priorities and stakeholders with the goal of effectively communicating our gun safety message to a wide range of audiences.

Successful candidates will be able to design and execute our social media strategy and take it to the next level. That means bringing creative ideas, coordinating across teams and coalitions, and managing a forward thinking workflow, and integrating digital communications tactics into broader communications campaigns. This position requires ability and interest in traveling up to 15% of time and in staffing weekend and evening events as needed.

All GIFFORDS employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 with limited exemptions as required by federal and state law. This position will work a hybrid schedule with some time in the Washington, DC office and some days remotely.

Duties + Responsibilities:

  • Define and drive the strategy, vision, and tone for all of our social media content.

  • Increase reach and engagement while remaining on message.

  • Review and proofread all social media content.

  • Work with the Social Media Manager to set the strategy, priorities, content calendar, and outline long-term projects.

  • Draft scripts and produce (and perhaps be featured in) social media videos in collaboration with the Video and Graphic Design Associate.

  • Devise and implement robust social media campaigns for GIFFORDS, including writing core social messages and conceptualizing visuals and videos that drive our audience to action and increase awareness about our work.

  • Maintain a content calendar and overall voice for Gabby Giffords and GIFFORDS on social media.

  • Collaborate with the design team on successful videos, graphics, and materials for social media and organizational needs.

  • Work with other internal teams to develop strategic social media goals and plans for specific initiatives and programs.

  • Work with Government Affairs and Development teams to drive grassroots strategy via email and SMS/MMS.

  • Manage grassroots advocacy campaigns across social, email, and mobile platforms.

  • Manage a list of social media influencers; create and implement a strategic outreach plan for specific campaigns.

  • Strategize best practices and messages for digital content, including social media, video, and graphics.

  • Monitor the latest social media trends and best practices, and review our metrics to inform campaigns and day-to-day strategy.

  • Coordinate with external partners on major priorities.

  • Help ensure smooth workflow and collaboration between the press, digital, and graphic arms of the comms team on campaigns and initiatives for social media and events.

  • Work with the entire team to respond appropriately in rapid response moments.

Essential skills + experience:

  • Five to ten years of experience creating and editing all types of social media content, preferably with experience in American national politics (political campaigns, government, party committee, PAC, or issue advocacy).

  • An interest in discovering and developing innovative and creative solutions to move messages and inspire key audiences to act.

  • Strong people and project management skills.

  • Possess keen news judgement, understanding political and governmental stories/processes.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

  • Well organized with superior attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to work with new content creators in the various voices of our organization and provide constructive feedback.

  • Expert level knowledge of social media cultures and styles, including Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud and WordPress.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, sense of humor, and ability to work well on a team.

  • Strong people management skills.

  • Experience as a content creator, including on-camera and direct-to-camera videos, is welcomed.

  • Comfort working in a moderate political environment with bi-partisan and centrist constituencies

Salary + benefits:

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $125,000 annually, with the exact salary depending on experience. Competitive benefits include employer-funded health, dental, and vision insurance; health, transit, and parking flexible spending accounts; 401k plan with 4% employer match; reimbursement for cell phone and monthly wifi stipend, 25 days of PTO annually plus paid week closure at the end of the calendar year; and ten paid federal holidays.
