The Maine Democratic Party (MDP) seeks an ambitious, innovative, and creative ** Digital Director** to take our online presence to the next level. This role isn’t just about maintaining social media accounts—it’s about setting the tone, driving the narrative, and cutting through the noise with hard-hitting messaging that excites our base and puts Republicans on defense. At a time of unparalleled national crisis, we need a digital strategist who can meet this moment—crafting sharp, compelling content that speaks to the urgency of now and mobilizes people to take action. This role reports to the MDP Executive Director.
About the Role
The ** Digital Director** will be responsible for shaping the Party’s online presence, managing daily rapid response communications, and driving our messaging across all digital platforms. This position will play a leading role in defining the narrative around key political issues, mobilizing grassroots engagement online and communicating our party’s foundational values. The Digital Director will work closely with senior leadership to develop and execute high-impact digital strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Digital Strategy & Content Creation

Develop and execute a bold, innovative digital strategy that pushes boundaries, challenges the opposition, and cuts through the noise to engage and mobilize Maine voters for Democrats

Own the Party’s voice online—crafting sharp, engaging content that calls out GOP extremism, highlights Democratic wins, and drives real action.

Create compelling content for social media and the MDP website.

Collaborate with other MDP departments including the organizing and fundraising teams to maximize the impact of digital content across all platforms.

Ensure messaging consistency across all digital channels, reflecting Party values and priorities.
Social Media Management
-
Lead day-to-day management of MDP’s social media accounts (Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, and emerging platforms) with creativity and urgency, using rapid response tactics, viral content, and innovative strategies to connect with Maine people.

Develop and implement strategies to increase engagement, reach new audiences, and drive voter mobilization.

Monitor political trends and respond rapidly with strategic digital content.

Work with MDP leadership to elevate their voices online, assisting in the creation of personal content that supports organizational goals and highlights strong party leadership.
Rapid Response & Messaging

Stay on top of breaking news, opposition attacks, and national/state political developments to craft real-time responses.

Work closely with the Communications Department to develop rapid response messaging and deploy it effectively across digital platforms.

Proactively combat misinformation and counter right-wing narratives.
Video & Graphic Content Development

Create and oversee the production of high-quality digital assets including videos, graphics, GIFs and more that drive online engagement.

Create compelling and visually dynamic graphics for MDP events, announcements, fundraising invitations and more.

Design internal materials such as fundraising collateral, business cards, stationary, and merchandise to align with MDP branding and messaging.
Email & Digital Fundraising

Support the MDP’s grassroots digital fundraising program through graphic design and brand development.

Adapt key themes from the digital fundraising program and integrate them across all digital platforms.

Utilize A/B testing, analytics, and best practices to improve performance.
Data & Analytics

Track and analyze digital performance metrics to refine and improve digital strategies.

Provide regular reports to the MDP Executive Director on engagement, audience growth, and effectiveness of digital campaigns.

Work with the Data Team to integrate digital organizing with voter outreach efforts in ways that make sense for MDP’s field program goals.
Other Duties
-
Draft regular party newsletters and email communications.

Prepare and lead semi-regular trainings to promote volunteer and party membership social media and digital skill growth.

Provide support for all MDP events(both virtual and in-person).

Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
-
One to two years of professional work** in social media**, digital communications, rapid response, digital grassroots organizing, or a related area.

Ability to think creatively and work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.

Capacity to skillfully navigate competing priorities and adapt quickly to shifting environments.

Ability to work irregular hours during peak campaign season.

Excellent communicator, including very strong digital communication skills including graphic design, video creation and editing and social media literacy

Ability to manage and move forward multiple projects at once.

Familiarity with social media tools and best practices.
-
Preference to candidates with knowledge of NGP, VAN, Mobilize, Drupal, HTML/CSS, Hootsuite, film editing software (e.g. Final Cut Pro), or graphic design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Canva).

Familiarity with Maine politics and/or the Maine press corps is a plus.

Previous experience supervising staff, interns, or volunteers is a plus.
Salary is dependent on experience and is in the $60,000 range. This is a full-time position that offers a generous benefits package and competitive salary commensurate with experience. This position is a part of the Maine Democratic Party employees' bargaining unit, represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #1837.

This position is based in Maine with at least 3-days a week required at MDP’s headquarters in Augusta. Additional in-person event-based work required as needed.
