Union Position: This job is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, Local 32035

Salary: $77,000 – $105,000, commensurate with experience

**Job Summary: **The Deputy Legislative Director is tasked with executing federal and state legislative strategies. In this role, the Deputy Director will provide reliable legal policy analyses and will work with the Vice President of Public Affairs, Legislative Director, internal partners, coalition groups, and other political stakeholders to promote pro-democracy reforms and fight voter suppression and pro-dark money policies.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Draft reliable legal policy analyses to inform ECU’s federal and state legislative strategies.

  • Develop policy reports highlighting political trends that impact democracy reform, campaign finance, and voting rights.

  • Partner with ECU teams to execute high-impact legislative strategies, including direct congressional outreach, coalition work, and community engagement and education.

  • Work with the Legislative Director to innovate strategies and tactics focused on fixing democracy, eliminating big money’s influence in politics, and protecting voting rights.

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with organizations and communities committed to protecting democracy and fighting voter suppression.

  • Build streamlined communications and systems of support for ECU’s federal and state partners.

  • Maintain strong relationships with congressional offices, caucuses, relevant committees, and state legislators to advance the organization's policy objectives.

  • Use ECU’s systems to track and collate engagement with lawmakers.

  • Prepare policy briefs, travel dossiers, meeting memos, talking points, and testimony.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctorate degree and at least 5-7 years of experience, including multiple years of Capitol Hill experience in legislative or committee contexts. A deep background in legal policy analysis, and in the legislative processes, along with the ability to track and analyze relevant policy developments, are essential. Strong relationship-building skills, with a proven track record of working effectively with lawmakers, political stakeholders, and coalition partners, are critical. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to prepare policy briefs, talking points, and represent the organization in public forums, are required for success in this role.
