The ** Michigan House Democratic Fund (MHDF)** is seeking a talented and driven** Communications Director** for the 2025-2026 election cycle. This individual will play a key role in helping Democrats retake the majority in the Michigan House of Representatives — one of the most critical battleground chambers in the country.
The Communications Director will be responsible for developing and executing the MHDF’s earned media strategy, crafting compelling messaging, acting as a spokesperson when appropriate, building and maintaining media relationships, and supporting House Democratic campaigns across the state. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the narrative around Michigan House Democrats’ values, accomplishments, and vision for the state.
Responsibilities include:

Lead the earned media and messaging strategy for targeted state House campaigns across Michigan, in coordination with the digital and political teams and other key stakeholders.

In election years, manage communications staff tasked with supporting individual candidates and districts.

Serve as a thought partner to candidates and campaign teams, identifying creative opportunities to generate press and amplify local stories.

Monitor and identify trends in media coverage and campaign messaging.

Collaborate with paid media vendors to align messaging and pitch strategic headlines to press.

Support caucus and campaign teams with rapid response and crisis communications as needed.

Build and maintain strong working relationships with local, state, and national reporters covering Michigan politics.

Provide strategic and hands-on communications support for candidates, including media training, drafting press releases, identifying and executing earned media opportunities, talking points, op-eds, social media content, and other materials.

Liaise with House Democratic leadership, members, campaign managers, and partner organizations on coordinated earned media strategies.

Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:

Experience working in Michigan or strong familiarity with the state’s political landscape preferred.

Prior work in state legislative campaigns or caucus operations is a plus, but not required.

Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

Deep understanding of the media ecosystem and what makes a story newsworthy.

Proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Comfort and experience interacting with reporters and acting as an on-the-record spokesperson when needed.

Proficiency with tools including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and social media platforms (X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram).

Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.

Valid driver’s license required.
Compensation:
$85,000-$95,000 plus comprehensive benefits including medical, vision, dental.
