The Chief of Staff is the Assemblymember’s second in command, who ensures that the office’s daily and long-term operations are effectively working toward the goal of bettering the conditions of Bronx residents and all New Yorkers. They will be a key partner in decision-making and implementing initiatives, and will do so on behalf of the Assemblymember when appropriate. They will manage the office’s staff, projects, and programs, and create and maintain office systems and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the Assemblymember’s top advisor on policy, budget, and district issues.
  • Manages office staff, including tasks and projects, setting direction and goals for staff, promotes transparent communication with staff around decisions and decision making roles, and enforces office policies and procedures
  • Manages the office budget and ensures efficient use of resources.
  • Manages relationships with stakeholders, staffers, volunteers, constituents and other elected officials’ offices; prioritizes issues and conversations for the Assemblymember
  • Creates an office culture of respect and open communication; mediates and resolves conflict within the staff.
  • Works with the Assemblymember to set both short and long term priorities and strategy
  • Sets agendas, researches for, and facilitates meetings for staff, constituents, and stakeholders.
  • Establishes, maintains, and examines systems so that workflows are clear and information is easy to find and understand.
  • Manages the time of the Assemblymember at a high level.
  • Pitches in at all levels of work when necessary; works flexible hours including evenings and weekends

Key abilities and experience

  • Excellent time management skills with an eye towards efficiency and efficacy; works under tight deadlines and able to prioritize multiple tasks and issues.
  • Understanding of the legislative process, as well as the structure and policies of New York State government and effective at coalition building in a legislative context
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing effective systems
  • Experience managing people and projects
  • Ability to work with basic office computer applications and social media platforms
  • Familiarity with the communities of the district

Salary & Benefits

$75,000-85,000 per year for a full time, in person position. This position offers health, vision + dental insurance as well as a retirement plan. The position also comes with sick days, vacation days, and personal time, as well as state holidays.
