JOB DESCRIPTION
Field Director
The Maine Democratic Party (MDP) is looking for an experienced and driven Field Director to develop, implement and manage a field program to defeat the voter suppression referendum that is on Maine's ballot this November. This role requires in-depth knowledge of organizing and data tools along with experience in building and managing successful direct voter contact field programs. The stakes are high, and we need a Field Director who can hit the ground running to help us win in November. The Field Director will report directly to the Executive Director and work closely with our Data and Down Ballot Victory departments.
About the Role
This is a leadership role for someone with a deep understanding of field work who wants to help build a winning campaign from the ground up. You’ll hire and lead a team of field organizers across the state working to save absentee voting in Maine by defeating the GOP-backed referendum that would make it harder for Mainers to vote. You'll work with MDP’s Executive Director along with MDP’s Data and Down Ballot Victory teams to execute an aggressive direct voter contact program that prioritizes reaching and mobilizing a universe of Democratic voters in both base-blue counties and rural areas. This is an opportunity to join a passionate, strategic, and growing team in one of the most important political battlegrounds in the country.
Key Responsibilities
-
Work with MDP leadership to design and manage a statewide field plan to defeat the referendum, with an emphasis on high-quality direct voter contact and volunteer engagement.
-
Hire, train, and supervise a team of up to 6 Field Organizers with the potential to add 2 Regional Directors to the program.
-
Develop and manage systems to track progress to phone and door goals, including daily qualitative and quantitative reporting for both MDP FOs and volunteers.
-
Work with stakeholders including Democratic County Committees, partners and the MDP Data team to cut turf.
-
Coordinate with MDP’s Data Director for targeting, voter universes, and to establish feedback loops to identify when shifts in strategy, scripting, targeting and more are needed to create the path to victory.
-
Work with local partners and allied organizations to align field strategies and amplify efforts.
-
Manage volunteer recruitment and retention plans, including virtual and in-person events and relational organizing efforts.
-
Collaborate with the Executive Director and Communications and Digital teams to ensure message alignment across all voter contact scripts.
-
Conduct regular staff check-ins and coaching with direct reports to ensure growth, accountability, data integrity and the support needed for your team’s success.
-
Lead absentee ballot and early vote outreach programs in the final phase of the campaign.
Qualifications
-
2+ cycles of field leadership experience, ideally including one cycle as a Field Director, Regional Organizing Director, or equivalent.
-
Demonstrated success in building and executing strategic voter contact plans at scale.
-
Strong management skills, including experience supervising and mentoring staff.
-
Fluency in VAN and voter file tools along with VPB, Spoke, Scale to Win, etc.; comfort working with spreadsheets and field data.
-
Experience working in coalition or partner environments is a plus.
-
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
-
Commitment to Democratic values, equity and inclusion, and protecting voting rights.
-
Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends, as needed, and ability to travel statewide for hands-on management of field programs.
-
Past experience in Maine is a plus.
