The Florida Democratic Party (FDP) is seeking an experienced bilingual Press Secretary with relationships to local, state and national press to work with the Communications Director to successfully lead and execute FDP’s press strategy. The Press Secretary will serve as primary contact for local outlets, Hispanic media and national press, manage and respond to a high volume of press inquiries, pitch proactive stories and be prepared to serve as the on-the-record spokesperson. The Press Secretary will also play an integral part in rapid response efforts.
The Press Secretary is expected to collaborate across departments internally and work with external partners and surrogates, including preparing Democratic elected officials, party officials and surrogates to hold Republicans accountable by providing media training and message guidance on Democratic priorities and messages.
This position will report to the Communications Director and be responsible for developing press strategies to raise the Democratic Party’s profile and strengthen the Democratic Party’s narrative.
The salary range for this position is $72,000 to $80,000.
Responsibilities Include:
• Serve as on-the-record spokesperson for the Florida Democratic Party when directed
• Identify and execute rapid response plans and creative earned media opportunities
• Quickly draft statements, talking points, media advisories, memos and any other external communications materials for the Chair as needed
• Organize and coordinate press conferences and other earned media events. Travel may be required.
• Draft weekly national and regional media pitches to advance proactive storytelling
• Constantly cultivate relationships with local, state and national reporters, including Hispanic media outlets and book interviews
• Maintain and update media lists
• Monitor and respond to press inquiries in a timely manner
• Prepare and staff the Chair or surrogates during press interviews by providing briefings and messaging guidance
Required Specific Skills & Qualifications:
• At least 4+ years proven political communications experience with at least one cycle of experience on a campaign
• A demonstrated track record of pitching stories, reporter relationships and staffing principals
• On-the-record experience
• Strong writing skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects independently
• Comfort with managing tight deadlines
• Understanding of media landscape and new media platforms
• Commitment to Democratic values
• Willingness to be available and contactable outside regular hours and ability to pivot
• Spanish language fluency / bilingual candidates are strongly preferred
Logistics
• Position is based in Florida
• Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable mode of transportation and the ability to travel extensively at times throughout the state for more than a day at a time
• Must be able to travel often for several days at a time
