About the Campaign:
Bushra Amiwala is running to represent Illinois’ 9th Congressional District with a bold, people-powered vision. As a Gen Z changemaker, national speaker, former Skokie school board member, and the first-ever Pakistani-American woman elected to public office in the U.S., Bushra is fighting for student debt relief, reproductive freedom, a living wage, and climate justice. Now, she’s building a dynamic campaign, and we’re looking for a Communications Director to help us tell that story.
About the Role:
We’re seeking a highly strategic, media-savvy, and values-aligned ** Communications Director** to lead all aspects of our campaign communications. You’ll shape Bushra’s public voice, manage media relations, build rapid response infrastructure, and ensure message consistency across press, digital, and field operations. This is a senior-level role in a competitive federal race.
Key Responsibilities:

Develop and drive the campaign’s overall messaging strategy and narrative

Serve as the campaign’s primary media contact, pitch stories, write press releases, and prep Bushra for interviews

Lead rapid response efforts and manage crisis comms

Oversee all digital communications, including social media, website content, emails, and digital ads

Draft speeches, talking points, and op-eds in Bushra’s voice

Plan and execute press events, town halls, and media-facing activities
-
Work closely with the campaign manager, candidate, and field/fundraising teams to ensure message alignment

Track performance metrics across media mentions, digital engagement, and community response
What We’re Looking For:

Minimum 5 years experience in political, campaign, or advocacy communications

Strong writing skills and a sharp messaging instinct

Experience working on Democratic campaigns at the local, state, or federal level
-
Ability to respond quickly and effectively in a fast-paced environment

Cultural competency and ability to connect across diverse communities
-
Familiarity with digital tools (NGP, Canva, social platforms, etc.)

Passion for progressive politics and youth-driven movements
Bonus if you have:
