This role will help ensure responsive, platform-specific content and deeper engagement with members online. The Fellow will help turn our social media presence into a dynamic organizing tool that recruits new members, activates our base, and reflects the voices of our veteran community.

Key Responsibilities:

Digital Engagement and Member Recruitment

  • Use DMs, comment threads, and direct outreach to recruit new veterans and supporters into our organizing community.

  • Help identify and cultivate online supporters who show leadership potential, in collaboration with the Organizing Team.

  • Log interactions and track engagement results in coordination with the broader communications and organizing infrastructure.

Content Creation and Platform Optimization

  • Design and adapt digital content (graphics, images, short-form video, stories) for specific platforms including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, and TwitterX.

  • Collaborate with the Comms team to develop engaging visuals that reflect campaign messaging, organizational tone, and member voice.

  • Support day-to-day content development needs, including resizing graphics, reformatting captions, or turning member stories into visual content.

  • Assist in maintaining and updating the digitalcontent calendar, including scheduling posts and preparing materials for rapid response moments.

Campaign and Program Integration

  • Work closely with Communications and Organizing staff to ensure social media content supports campaign goals and calls to action.

  • Contribute ideas and sample content for digital-first tactics and storytelling aligned with Common Defense’s theory of change.

  • Assist with evergreen content and supporter story bank development to enable timely, mission-aligned publishing.

Professional Development

  • Participate in team trainings on digital organizing, messaging strategy, and tools such as Action Network, Canva, Meta Suite, and Slack.

  • Stay current on online trends and best practices in visual storytelling, meme culture, veteran narratives, and digital advocacy.

  • Engage with broader staff and member communities to stay grounded in the political and cultural context of our work.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Commitment to social justice and the mission of Common Defense.

  • Familiarity with major social media platforms and an interest in growing online communities through content and engagement.

  • Basic graphic design or visual storytelling skills, with experience using tools like Canva, Adobe Express, or similar platforms.

  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Military experience or familiarity with veteran and military communities, institutions, and values.

  • Comfort with digital tools such as Google Suite, Slack, and content scheduling platforms.

Preferred:

  • Experience creating content or engaging followers for a political, advocacy, or community-focused organization.

  • Understanding of how to tailor content by platform to increase reach, engagement, and action.

  • Familiarity with Action Network or similar email and organizing tools.
