The Opportunity
Protect Our Winters is looking to hire a Field Organizer in Western Colorado, Western Montana, and Northern Nevada. These roles are instrumental in organizing and mobilizing grassroots communities for our climate campaigns at the local, state, and national levels. This is a unique opportunity to engage outdoor communities, deepen civic engagement, and grow our movement’s reach on the ground.
Reporting to the Advocacy & Campaigns Manager, this position is responsible for building grassroots power across the state by developing and managing a robust volunteer and partner network, organizing events and activations, and engaging in on-the-ground campaign work alongside local volunteers and partners to mobilize the outdoor community for climate action.
During election cycles, the workload will shift to focus on nonpartisan civic engagement efforts, including get-out-the-vote initiatives that encourage the outdoor community to make their voices heard at the ballot box. A close working relationship between the POW Campaigns team and this role is essential for campaign cohesion and success.
Supporting our grassroots work will require someone with a passion for creating a community among outdoor enthusiasts, the curiosity to engage in discussion with those not like themselves, and the eagerness to learn new skills along the way. The position will require flexibility with hours, as no week is the same and often work happens outside of typical business hours, including nights and weekends. This position involves frequent travel throughout the state and requires reliable transportation.
TL;DR: If you are looking to get into the politics of solving the climate crisis, this role might be for you. Political Experience with organizing and advocacy is preferred, but being community-driven, action-oriented, and resourceful is even more essential.
Key Responsibilities
Build and Maintain a Robust Volunteer Network

Recruit active volunteers through 1:1s and events.

Support volunteers to move up and down the ladder of engagement.

Mobilize community members and volunteers to engage in POW campaigns such as GOTV, protecting public lands, and supporting clean energy projects.
Events, Trainings, and Partnerships

Schedule and execute events to develop and grow a local volunteer network and to support campaign efforts as needed.

Train volunteers on POW’s mission, vision, and strategy.

At times, represent POW at partner events from tabling to speaking on panels and more.

Lead on-the-ground marketing for regional events, including but not limited to poster drops, organizing volunteers to spread the word, setting up communication channels to distribute through the growing volunteer network, and word of mouth.
Develop Local Leadership Teams

Recruit and identify local leaders who can move volunteers up the ladder of engagement into core leadership teams in select communities.

Execute design structure to delegate roles, tasks, and responsibilities to these core teams.

Provide POW perspective and coaching, manage territory budget, and guide geography-specific actions and activities.
Data Management & Reporting

Participate in weekly internal meetings with management and departments as needed.

Weekly reporting on 1:1s, events, volunteer actions, calls to action, and findings from the field.

Responsible for managing, tracking, and delivering event materials.

Oversee the territory budgets and track their expenses, ensuring budgets are clear and approved, and receipts and expenses are reported.
A separate and independent nonprofit organization, the POW Action Fund (POW AF) works to make action on climate change a top policy priority for the outdoor sports community. Employees of POW, including the Field Organizer, may, from time to time, provide certain services to and participate in certain efforts for POW AF.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to organize a group of people to accomplish a goal and build relationships within the community.

Experience in climate work and/or the outdoor industry, including intellectual curiosity about climate, clean energy, policy, campaigns, and/or the outdoor industry.

Connection to Colorado, Montana, or Nevada’s political landscape and outdoor community.

A keen understanding of political power structures and how to influence people.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex policy issues for diverse audiences.

Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders — including policymakers, coalition partners, and outdoor community representatives.

Experience independently managing and mentoring volunteers/people, including assigning tasks, communicating expectations and timelines, and providing feedback.

Experience independently scoping and leading projects, including project briefs, timelines, reports, and after-action reviews.

Ability to think quickly on your toes and work dynamically.

Ability to manage multiple projects with minimal direction in a remote setting.

Comfort facilitating group discussions, workshops, trainings, etc.

Experience in small-dollar fundraising and managing project budgets to maximize campaign impact.

Experience with Salesforce and Trello or other CRM or project management platforms.
**Location: **Due to the assignments and nature of this position, the candidate must reside in Northern Nevada (the Tahoe/Truckee area will also be considered). Housing is not provided.
