ABOUT DMO

Democratic Municipal Officials (DMO) is a national association of elected mayors, city council members, and other municipal leaders who identify with the values of the Democratic Party. DMO accomplishes its mission to connect, elect, and empower municipal elected officials by leveraging its national network of members, alumni and strategic partners. As a constituency organization of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Democratic Municipal Officials is the Democratic voice in local politics and the local voice in Democratic politics.

POSITION SUMMARY

In collaboration with the Board of Directors (the Board) and the Executive Director (ED), the Communications Director (CD) is responsible for developing and executing a communications plan that strengthens the organization’s narrative and leading all aspects of the organization’s internal and external communications, including daily operations, rapid response efforts, press events, long-term communications plans, and all digital communications.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage all communications trackers and develop strategies geared towards the communications lifecycle and journey as it relates to long-term internal and external communications and goals, as well as the news of the day.

  • Direct strategy and day‐to‐day workflow of the organization’s digital programs, including email, social media, website, messaging, and more.

  • Write, edit, and design content for the organization’s email list. Segment lists, test approaches, and use best practices to raise money, mobilize members, and build stakeholder engagement.

  • Manage the organization’s website and social media accounts. Write, edit, design, and curate all digital content.

  • Utilize the DMO branding guide to develop all graphics, videos, photos, and other visual media.

  • Write all speaker memos and talking points.

  • Manage content, design, and delivery of monthly DMO Newsletter and other regular communications and updates.

  • Monitor and track local and national press for relevant stories and developments, and develop and deploy rapid response.

  • Write and disseminate press releases, media advisories, statements, and other outreach materials.

  • Ensure message continuity across all areas of communications programs.

  • Track internal and external communications, including analytics and coverage reports weekly, monthly, or as requested.

  • Maintain strong relationships with other communications professionals in the Democratic Ecosystem.

  • Work with the organization’s Executive Director and Board on fundraising strategy decisions, public-facing messaging tactics, and politically sensitive issues as appropriate.

  • Work with the organization’s Development Director to ensure all communications meet compliance requirements.

  • Work with the DMO team to draft and execute all fundraising communications, talking points, and scripts.

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • At least four years of professional communications experience with Democratic Party organizations, Democratic political campaigns, Labor Unions, issue advocacy, or related organizations. National communications and/or digital experience preferred.

  • Proven commitment to the mission and principles of DMO and the Democratic Party.

  • Comprehensive understanding of political communications principles and tactics.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as grammatical and copy editing skills.

  • Proficiency in Google Suite Tools, Facebook, Twitter, BlueSky, and other social media platforms.

  • Experience managing email communications and list creation in NGP.

  • Experience managing ActBlue pages and content.

  • Experience managing website content using NGP and WordPress.

  • Experience and competency with core graphic design skills and principles, and fluency with graphic design software, including Adobe Suite.

  • Basic videography and photography skills preferred.

  • On-the-record experience, as well as experience with campaign operations and political communications preferred.

  • Willingness to travel and work non-traditional hours when necessary.

  • Capable of managing multiple deadlines and responsibilities, and operating with a sense of urgency, drive, and energy.

  • Display a high level of integrity and trustworthiness, displaying mature judgment in handling confidential and sensitive information.
