JOB DESCRIPTION
The Montana Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (MDLCC), the political arm of the Montana House and Senate Democratic caucuses would like to announce an opening for the position of Caucus Director. This demanding, full-time position will work closely with MDLCC’s Steering Committee, Caucus Leadership and Members, candidates, partners and allies, and current MDLCC staff to formulate and execute plans for the 2026 cycle and beyond.
MDLCC has grown steadily over the past twelve years. It is now a year-round, permanent joint caucus organization, with a budget of $350,000 and 2 full-time staff in an off-cycle year and just over $2,000,000 budget with over 40 full and part-time staff in an election year. It is a professional organization poised to grow even more as donors and organizations across the state invest in a more Democratic legislature. Applicants must have a strong passion for legislative elections and an ability to lead a professional organization.

The MDLCC Caucus Director responsibilities include:
Caucus Program:

Serve as chief strategist and tactician for the Montana Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.

Advise the MDLCC Steering Committee on targeting strategy each cycle, including determining Frontline and Red to Blue races.

Write, manage, and execute the 2026 campaign plan, annual budget, and annual finance plan with input from the MDLCC Steering Committee.

Coordinate the overall operations of MDLCC, including hiring and managing MDLCC staff, contracting MDLCC consultants, and utilizing MDLCC volunteers.

Handle outreach, coordination, and ongoing communication with allies, elected officials, legislators, the national DLCC, and other partners.

Represent the MDLCC at key political events, meetings, conferences, caucus meetings, coordinated campaigns, and the broader political community throughout the state/nation that advance program goals.

Communicate the caucus’ message effectively to grassroots leaders to keep them informed and engaged.

Recruit and train quality legislative candidates early and help them create and execute their campaign plans.

Coordinate media relations and maximize press opportunities for legislative races, including letters to the editor, opinion pieces, TV, and radio, as well as earned media and rapid response.

Work with the Democratic Leader from each legislative chamber to prepare and execute plans and strategy for MDLCC activity during that session.
Staff Management:
-
Supervise and provide direction to Caucus staff and interns and conduct performance reviews.

Coordinate campaign teams’ activities and track progress toward goals.

Provide ongoing support, motivation, and recognition to managers.
Fundraising:
-
Direct and oversee fundraising efforts, including working with Steering Committee members, Caucus Leadership, the House Chair and Senate Chair, and Finance Director to develop and implement fundraising plans.

Manage and execute strategic statewide finance plan, which includes soliciting $5,000+ contributions as well as low-dollar contributions

Work directly with various donor groups to plan and execute large-scale events and fundraisers for the caucus, along with targeted campaigns

Hire, train, and manage finance staff
Budget Management:
-
Work to develop the Caucus budgets and oversee their implementation.

Manage administrative, budgetary, and human resources for the organization.

Oversee MDLCC bank accounts– including the right to monitor accounts and approve any expenses/transfers before they are made.
Data Management:
-
Communicate the importance of input into the VAN and the maintenance of a healthy and usable database for current and future legislative candidates.

Maintain accurate records of caucus and candidate campaigns’ work, including the total number of events and attendees, voter contact numbers, and fundraising numbers.

Collaborate with the Steering Committee to establish quantitative and/or qualitative goals that track progress and candidate success.
Board Management:

Work with the House Chair, Senate Chair and MDLCC Steering Committee to enhance, modernize, and formalize the operations of MDLCC.

Organize and arrange quarterly meetings of the MDLCC Steering Committee, including drafting agendas and providing financial updates.

Onboard members of the MDLCC Steering Committee and ensure they understand and execute their responsibilities
