JOB DESCRIPTION
The Director of Digital Fundraising and Engagement (Director) will be responsible for developing and executing the strategy to raise revenue from individuals giving below $10,000 through direct marketing channels, including digital, direct mail, lead generation, stewardship, SMS, and emergency fundraising. The Director will be responsible for all donor recruitment, retention, and engagement activities to generate both monthly and one-time donors with a focus on strong donor loyalty and lifetime value. They will also be responsible for overseeing the USA for UNFPA’s digital platforms and communication strategy on those channels to reach new audiences, increase the number of supporters, and generate overall brand awareness.
While the Director’s primary focus will be direct response and digital fundraising, they will also oversee a digital marketing and communications function to strengthen donor engagement, supporter growth, and brand visibility. This includes managing a team responsible for content generation, social media, website, annual report development, video and influencer campaigns, and enforcing brand guidelines.
Reporting to the CEO and as part of the Senior Management Team at USA for UNFPA, the Director will work closely with the Leadership Giving, Database, and Operations teams to achieve overall organizational objectives and help USA for UNFPA reach its ambitious goal of raising $100 million by 2030 for UNFPA’s lifesaving work.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Strategy
-
Develop overall strategic direction, objectives, and budget for the mass market fundraising and communications program.

Develop and implement a fundraising and communications program that builds strong donor loyalty and increases donor lifetime value.

Develop and manage the annual planning and budget process for the digital fundraising and engagement team, including developing an integrated fundraising and communications calendar, and setting strategic objectives, key performance indicators, and revenue targets.

Align communications and content strategy with fundraising goals to support lead generation, donor conversion, and donor retention.

Complete biannual forecasting, ensuring targets are met and operating expenses are in line.

Work closely with the Leadership Giving team to ensure an overall strategically coordinated approach to fundraising and develop tactics to move donors to the mid-level donor and major donor programs.
Donor Acquisition and Retention

Identify and develop new opportunities in both donor acquisition and donor retention. Recommend new channels and tactics to test.

Increase the number and value of both monthly and one-time donations from individuals using various online and offline channels, including direct mail, digital fundraising, lead generation, and emergency fundraising.

Develop and implement campaigns that achieve fundraising and awareness goals and lead fundraising activities during emergencies.

Manage the Retention Marketing Manager to develop and implement strong donor journeys for each donor segment, using a multi-channel approach to improve overall retention and donation value of donors

Manage the Retention Marketing Manager to develop strong content to engage and retain donors and ensure brand consistency and messaging

Liaise with the Donor Care Unit to ensure processes are followed and the highest levels of donor care are maintained.
Marketing and Communications
-
Manage the Senior Communications Associate to enhance U4U’s image, brand, positioning, and broader public engagement through social media platforms, website, peer-to-peer platform, and other opportunities.

Oversee development of compelling content (stories, videos, graphics, blogs, digital assets) that highlights UNFPA’s impact and supports fundraising campaigns.

Ensure brand consistency and enforce brand guidelines across all communications.

Support with the Annual Report, donor impact reports, and other key communications tools that strengthen donor confidence and inspire giving.

Support team to increase digital reach and awareness by cultivating influencers, managing organic strategies, and leveraging emerging platforms to grow supporter pipelines.

Support with engagement and soft advocacy activities that build visibility for USA for UNFPA’s mission and values.
Data Analytics
-
Work closely with the Database Manager to produce ongoing analysis and monitor campaign results to inform future direct marketing activity.

Complete quarterly reports, including reforecasts and progress reports as required.

Develop and monitor all key performance indicators and analysis to support and inform the strategy and its implementation.

Work with Database Manager to ensure consistent flow of key constituent information across all marketing platforms.
Management
-
As part of the Senior Management Team, meaningfully contribute to the organization’s strategy, growth, and culture.
-
Manage and lead the digital fundraising and engagement team, providing vision and strategic direction. This also includes managing 2-3 agencies that provide services in digital acquisition and direct mail acquisition/retention.

Set goals for individual team members and support and monitor their progress against set objectives. Provide training and development for team members.

Manage all RFP processes and oversee the appointment of suppliers to support fundraising. Manage and oversee all contracts with suppliers for the fundraising program.

Lead on the Board Development and Communications Committee together with other Directors to ensure alignment between staff and board on annual fundraising activities and opportunities.

Support the CEO in the USA for UNFPA Board meetings and UNFPA partnership.

Complete other projects as required.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
-
7+ years of digital marketing leadership experience, preferably in a non-profit organization. Regardless of setting, the ideal candidate must have proven experience delivering on direct response fundraising goals — ideally $2MM+ annually.

Knowledge and experience of donor acquisition channels, donor retention, and donor development methods — including both traditional best practices and emerging innovations.

Strong experience with digital fundraising is essential, as this is our largest channel of investment.

Specifically, the candidate should have a working knowledge of all the following channels and deep, hands-on expertise with 2-3 channels: Email marketing, SMS marketing, paid social, paid search, and SEO

Experience with mid-level giving and monthly giving

Experience implementing cohesive, innovative, aggressive, and integrated direct response strategies that have resulted in measurable and significant growth in net revenue and donor base

Experience with developing Annual Plans/Budget and with fundraising reports, analysis, and KPIs.

Working knowledge of fundraising best practices, including sound copywriting and creative judgement.

Experience with fundraising-related databases and software

Excellent donor and vendor communications and relationship management skills

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
