JOB DESCRIPTION

What we do at Permit Power

Permit Power is on a mission to make it cheap and easy for American families to power their lives by cutting the red tape that makes home solar and batteries so expensive.

We are a small but ambitious team that advances common-sense policy fixes in states across the country to modernize processes like permitting and utility interconnection, allowing tens of millions more American families to produce their own affordable electricity.

If we’re successful at lowering the price of home solar and batteries for American families, almost 20m more families will be able to install almost 200GW of power on their roofs and save $1.2trn over the life of their systems.

**tl;dr **Join Permit Power to oversee state advocacy campaigns to slash utility bills for American families by dramatically accelerating the installation of home solar and batteries.

What you’ll be doing:

Already, within less than two years, we have helped ensure almost 100m Americans have access to instant permitting for home solar and batteries. We are looking for a seasoned Campaign Director to build on that momentum and work to pass impactful state legislation to cut more home solar and battery red tape. Reporting to the Chief of Advocacy, you’ll be responsible for coordinating our state-level campaigns in 5-6 states.

  • Passing state legislation: You’ll build and oversee legislative campaigns to streamline the approval process for, and reduce the cost of, home solar and batteries in a subset of Permit Power’s target states. This includes driving strategy, coordinating partners, and managing campaign budgets.

  • Leading our relationships on the ground: You’ll identify, recruit, and lead our engagement with local partners, in-state lobbyists, and communications firms.

  • Serving as our internal expert and lead strategist for your turf: You’ll conduct landscape analysis and “own” our long-term campaign and political strategy in the states you cover

  • Driving implementation: As appropriate, you’ll bottom-line work to translate our statehouse wins into on-the-ground progress– ensuring that state and local governments and utilities follow the law.

  • Contributing to our national advocacy program: As part of our Advocacy team, you’ll help inform our organizational strategy, represent Permit Power externally as a thought leader, and assist with fundraising as needed.

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience running successful legislative campaigns across multiple states. The strongest candidates will have 5-10 years of experience leading comprehensive campaigns involving inside and outside game strategies

  • Experience building organizational partnerships, overseeing coalitions, and managing government relations and communications consultants

  • Experience assessing the external landscape and identifying opportunities for winnable and impactful policy campaigns

  • **Familiarity and relationships with advocacy and industry organizations that work on permitting reform, utility reform, and distributed generation, **and/or ability to build this quickly.

  • Knowledge of energy issues– specifically behind-the-meter solar/storage and electrification– a plus

What will make you a good fit:

  • Entrepreneurial and self-directed. We are a small team, and you will need to be able to figure out what your goals are and how to achieve them within the set timeframe.

  • Outcomes-oriented. We measure ourselves by how much we can drive down the cost and timelines for installing solar and batteries, and how much more solar and batteries are installed as a result of our work. We are looking for someone who will find fulfillment in achieving those concrete goals.

  • Collaborative and low-ego. We’re a start-up organization and will make many mistakes. We will only succeed if we work together, acknowledge our mistakes, and learn from them.

  • **Flexible and open-minded. **Comfortable collaborating and finding common ground with stakeholders across the ideological spectrum

  • Organized and detail-oriented. No one will be looking over your shoulder, and you will need to take true ownership over the quality of your work, and stay on top of your own administrative work.

  • Occasional travel: Willing to travel for quarterly team meetings and periodic partner meetings, hearings, and conferences.

The salary & benefits you can expect:

  • The salary range for this position is $133,000-155,000. This is a full-time, exempt position. Permit Power offers a generous and comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, dental insurance, vision care, pre-tax commuter benefits, FSA, 401k with 5% percent contribution matching (limits apply).

  • Permit Power offers 6 months of paid maternity or paternity leave to bond with a newborn or adopted child within the first year of birth or adoption.

  • We are currently a team of six, working remotely in San Francisco, Santa Cruz, New York City, Denver, and Pittsburgh. Candidates anywhere in the US will be considered; Eastern and Central time zones are preferred.
