The NYC Public Engagement Unit delivers government services and benefits to New Yorkers. We need a Deputy Communications Director to tell our stories, in traditional and social media, to encourage more New Yorkers to get the help they deserve. Watch our two-minute video to understand how PEU serves the City.
Position Overview
As Deputy Communications Director, you will serve as the second- in-command of PEU’s seven-person Communications Team. Reporting to the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, you will help shape external messaging, manage day-to-day communications operations, and help make PEU’s work known to key audiences. The PEU Comms team spans traditional and digital channels; you should have experience moving stories through both. And you should have experience managing a talented, fast-paced team.
PEU is a great place to work. In any given week, we might launch a campaign helping New Yorkers stay in their rent-stabilized apartments, move out of homeless shelters into their own apartments, save money on subway fare, find free childcare, and so much more. We respond to the City’s most urgent needs, whether that is a devastating storm or a slow-moving affordability crisis. If you like to pivot from one campaign to another, move quickly, and be at the center of the action, this could be the next job for you.
Key Responsibilities
-
Manage and mentor a communications team of at least five staff members across press, digital, and creative functions.
-
Oversee development and execution of integrated communications strategies that support PEU programs and Citywide initiatives.
-
Lead production of press materials, social media content, newsletters, and printed collateral to ensure alignment with agency and Mayoral messaging.
-
Manage the communications budget, contracts, and vendor relationships to ensure efficiency and compliance.
-
Serve as a liaison to the Mayor’s Press Office and other City agencies to coordinate announcements and events.
-
Support and attend PEU and Mayoral events throughout the five boroughs.
-
Provide rapid-response support and manage communications during time-sensitive or high-pressure moments.
-
Contribute to long-term strategic planning and the development of outreach campaigns.
-
Maintain high editorial standards and ensure accessibility and clarity across all materials.
Qualifications
-
Minimum of 10 years of experience in communications, public affairs, public relations, or related fields.
-
Proven experience in press, digital, and print communications.
-
Experience managing a team.
-
Experience managing budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships.
-
Exceptional writing and editing skills in English; other languages are a plus.
-
Experience working in government, political campaigns, or public-sector advocacy is preferred.
-
Advertising or marketing experience is a plus.
-
Ability to manage up, meet tight deadlines, and balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
-
Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as needed for events and announcements.
