JOB DESCRIPTION

About the role

The Brad Lander for Congress campaign is seeking an experienced Communications Director to lead the campaign’s overall messaging and communications strategy. The Communications Director will shape the core messaging of the campaign, drive earned media and digital strategy, and provide strategic guidance to the candidate and senior team while overseeing all press, digital, and rapid-response operations. This position reports to the Campaign Manager and works closely with the candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the campaign’s communications strategy and provide guidance to the candidate and senior staff on message, framing, and emerging narratives.

  • Oversee all earned media strategy and planning, including pitching, press events, building strong media relationships.

  • Prepare the candidate for key interviews, debates, speeches, and public appearances.

  • Lead the rapid-response operation, monitoring news and disinformation and directing timely, strategic responses.

  • Oversee the campaign’s digital strategy, including managing social media platforms and content creation, with ability to move quickly when trending moments break.

  • Collaborate with the political, field, fundraising, and data teams to identify and elevate compelling stories and community validators that strengthen the campaign’s narrative.

  • Manage the communications team and work closely with consultants and vendors to ensure a well-coordinated communications operation.

Competencies

  • 5+ years of experience working for political organizations, campaigns, government communications or in public relations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, produce high-quality content across multiple platforms under tight deadlines.

  • Strong relationships with, and the ability to build relationships with, the New York City, New York State, and national press corps. Judgment to engage effectively with reporters and media outlets.

  • Experience in New York City and national politics and the ability to think critically about message and narrative in a fast moving media environment.

  • Proficiency in social media platform management and content creation.

  • Independent who demonstrates strong initiative to effectively manage projects with many moving parts under a problem-solving mindset.

  • Commitment to progressive politics and familiarity with communities of NY-10.
