Communications Advisor

The Democratic Party of Illinois (DPI) is hiring a Communications Advisor focused on earned media in both traditional and new media spaces and assisting with rapid response operations for Illinois Democrats up and down the ballot. This position will pitch stories on behalf of the state party and assist the existing team with building events and creating press plans.

About the Democratic Party of Illinois

DPI is dedicated to electing Democrats at all levels across Illinois while building the most active, inclusive, and diverse party possible. Organize Illinois 2026, DPI’s Coordinated Campaign, will serve as the base of operations for statewide campaign activity to elect and protect Democrats in Illinois in the 2026 midterm election cycle. The Coordinated Campaign is a division of DPI that pools resources for field and critical get-out-the-vote (GOTV) activities for the entire Democratic ticket.

What Will You Do?

The Communications Advisor will work with the Communications team at DPI to elect Democrats up and down the ballot through effective communication strategies and creating press events and plans. Specific duties include:

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist with the development and execution of the state party’s rapid response operation.

  • Identify opportunities to hold Republicans in DC and Illinois accountable, with a focus on the Governor’s race

  • Quickly draft and edit communications materials including but not limited to posts for social platforms and press releases

  • Prior experience with pitching earned media and successfully working directly with members of the media on the record is preferred

Who are you

The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of the tactics and tools needed to run an effective communications program at the statewide level. The ideal candidate is a natural leader, consensus builder, and a passionate promoter of Democratic values. They will be creative, highly organized, and a self-starter. An understanding of Illinois’ complex political and media landscape is preferred.

Qualifications

  • At least two cycles working in a paid role as communications staff on an electoral or issue advocacy campaign or commensurate experience in an official government office;

  • Demonstrated experience creating written communications materials including press releases, advisories, and op-eds;

  • Demonstrated experience working with the press, particularly with going on the record and knowledge of attribution standards–understanding when and how to delineate on and off the record commentary

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment;

  • Ability to effectively collaborate and work well with internal staff and external stakeholders at all levels;

  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and able to adapt quickly to meet project needs;

Job Details

Applicants must live in or be willing to relocate to Chicago, Illinois. Housing will not be provided.

The salary range for this role is $80,000 - $90,000. The hourly expectation will fluctuate depending on the campaign cycle, but will be a minimum of 40 hours per week. DPI also offers a generous benefits package with the opportunity for continued growth after the election cycle.
