About Derek:
Derek Kitchen is a nationally-recognized leader whose career has bridged groundbreaking civil rights, local governance, and high-level federal service. In 2013, he was the plaintiff in Kitchen v. Herbert, the landmark case that made Utah the first state in the nation where a federal court required recognition of same-sex marriage—establishing critical precedent on the road to nationwide equality. He went on to win election to the Salt Lake City Council, where he championed housing, economic development, and inclusive growth. In 2018, he was elected to the Utah State Senate, where he became one of the few openly LGBTQI+ state senators in the country and established himself as a strong Democratic voice in an overwhelmingly Republican legislature. His work earned him a reputation as a bold, principled, and progressive lawmaker willing to challenge both parties when the stakes were high. Most recently, Derek was appointed by President Biden to serve as Senior Vice President at the Export-Import Bank of the United States.
About UT-1:
In November 2025, Utah Judge Dianna Gibson issued a ruling that rejected the GOP’s gerrymandered map, approving one that creates an historic Democratic-leaning district. The newly-drawn UT-1 covers Salt Lake City, West Jordan, Millcreek, West Valley City, and Magna. According to the Cook Political Report, the Partisan Voter Index (PVI) of UT-1 is D+12, and if the district existed during the 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris would have won it by 24 points.
Derek was raised in the southern part of the district, spent his adult life living and working in the west side of the valley, and represented its northeast corner in the State Senate. His lived experience and public record make him uniquely positioned to lead—and win—in this new, competitive district. If elected, he would be the first openly LGBTQI+ member elected to Congress from Utah.
