JOB DESCRIPTION
The Field Director (FD) is responsible for designing, implementing, and executing a disciplined paid canvassing and community outreach program to grow our understanding of issues, to shift narratives, and to deepen our relationships within specific communities. The FD is responsible for recruiting, training, and coaching our field team. This is a directorial position that requires organizational and political leadership in a collaborative, fast-paced, and innovative environment.
The FD is a part of the Program Department and Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and will need to work in close collaboration across projects to successfully drive our organization forward. A successful FD will focus on sustainable, consistent, and long-term power building through adaptive, consistent, politically relevant, and layered listening, issue, and electoral canvasses, while building a rigorous and strategic canvassing team to execute our organization’s mission and vision.
The job is a directorial position based in Pennsylvania that will require travel throughout our counties (Lackawanna, Luzerne, Northampton, Lehigh, Lancaster, Berks), weeknight, and weekend hours.

PA Stands Up is a union shop, this position is not within the union’s bargaining unit.
RESPONSIBILITIES
MANAGEMENT
-
Directly supervise paid field staff driving accountability, ongoing reflection, learning, innovation, and improvement through check-ins, goal setting, accountability, and one to one coaching.

Metrics

Develop standardized metrics for field staff to meet as a standard for PA Stands Up field organizing programs including but not limited to:

Door knocks

Phone calls
-
Member recruitment/prospects
-
Host spaces in the Field department for consistent outreach, engagement, and development for staff and member leaders

Work with the Directors of Power Building and People + Culture to develop and implement a consistent training program for our field staff
-
Develop and train on a standardized curriculum for new canvassers
-
Daily political education for canvassers
-
Develop and train on campaign specific training and skill-building in relation to chapter-specific and statewide issue campaigns.

Work with the Senior Leadership Team to develop and execute internal training programs for staff development
COMPLIANCE
-
Ensure all field programs and staff are in compliance with our internal processes.

Work with the Director of Operations + Finance to ensure all work is done in accordance with legal requirements and all hours worked by the director and field staff are tracked properly

Advise on and maintain any firewalls or other compliance measures taken by PA Stands Up over the course of election cycles
ELECTORAL STRATEGY + ISSUE CAMPAIGNING

Oversee an ambitious paid partisan and non-partisan canvass program in PA Stands Up’s priority municipalities

Manage and oversee all paid and distributed field programs
-
Set field targeting and direct voter contact goals to help win key races and build the power of our chapters
-
Work with SLT and chapters’ member-leaders to establish long term strategies to flip our state legislature, congressional districts and senate seats while electing movement aligned champions

Collaborate with the Organizing and Communications departments to build powerful local, state and national campaigns and achieve policy wins through sophisticated field programs
-
In cooperation with the Director of Power Building, drive the local chapter powerbuilding support strategy, based upon local chapter powerbuilding plans for membership recruitment and leadership development

Work in collaboration with the Senior Program Team on statewide days of action or mobilizations in relation to statewide issue campaigns, budget fights, and rapid response mobilizations
COMMUNICATIONS + LEADERSHIP

Demonstrate visionary leadership to grow a mass movement of multi-racial and cross-class working people across Pennsylvania
-
Build relationships with local members and leaders engaged in statewide campaigns through regular 1-1s across chapter membership.

Represent the organization in local, state, and national coalitions as determined by Director of Power Building; work with coalition partners on aligned campaigns
-
Exemplify and cultivate a work culture of support and accountability
-
Work with Director of Narrative & Communications to integrate local chapter priorities into our electoral and issue campaign work plan
-
Together with Director of Narrative & Communications, help shape public messaging and communications strategy to support electoral and legislative campaigns
QUALIFICATIONS
-
A demonstrated commitment to equity, justice and liberation for all people
-
A team player who shines as an individual leader while taking a collaborative approach to working with others to achieve shared objectives
-
A minimum of three years of relevant experience in grassroots organizing, labor, and/or politics, with experience in building grassroots community teams around a methodology of power and self-interest is required
-
Experience coordinating training and leadership development arcs for individual and multiple groups
-
Experience with organizing inside of a local chapter/umbrella organization structure for base building
-
Experience in project and team management, and in staff supervision
-
Experience in electoral and membership data management
-
Experience working in multi-entity organizations is helpful, but not necessary
-
Demonstrated leadership ability and experience working in rural areas and/or communities of color
-
Strong commitment to independent, innovative political action by and for working people
-
Proven track record of planning, managing and executing complex issue and legislative campaigns
-
A goal-driven, detail-oriented self-starter and problem-solver with ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

Acute strategy development and analytical skills

Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
-
Bi-lingual Spanish/English preferred
LOCATION + OTHER REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate lives in the Northeastern PA, Lehigh Valley, Berks County, Lancaster County, or the Philadelphia area. Candidates should have a cell phone plan, home internet and access to transportation for travel.
This is a directorial, full-time position that requires travel, weeknight, and weekend hours.
SALARY & BENEFITS
The starting salary for this position is $77,500 with employer paid medical, dental, and vision insurance; access to a 401(K) with employer match; and generous paid time off.
