JOB DESCRIPTION

The Maine Democratic Party (MDP) is seeking a seasoned senior operative to serve as the Senior Organizing and Political Director, responsible for developing and overseeing the Party’s statewide political, organizing, and down-ballot programs. This role manages three core current departments: Party Affairs, Down Ballot Victory and Field. A core responsibility is to ensure alignment across field operations, local party infrastructure, candidate development, and major electoral programs, including the execution of MDP’s 2026 voter education and registration programs.

About the Role

This position acts as the connective tissue among organizing, political and campaign execution; translating MDP’s strategic priorities into coordinated, high-impact programs that build Democratic power from the municipal level up.

The Senior Organizing and Political Director will reduce operational strain on the Executive Director by owning day-to-day management of political and organizing programs while also creating accountability, cohesion, and long-term capacity building across the organization. This includes managing the timelines, benchmarks and metrics tied to caucuses, voter education & engagement, and county committee investments.

This is an opportunity to join a passionate, strategic, and growing team in one of the most important political battlegrounds in the country ahead of the crucial 2026 midterms. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide senior-level oversight of MDP’s field, down-ballot, party and political affairs programs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

  • Oversee implementation of new statewide programs focused on 2026 caucus growth, rank choice voting education, vote share expansion programs and county committee incentive grants.

  • Develop integrated plans that connect municipal organizing, state legislative outcomes, ballot initiatives, and coordinated campaigns, including planning off-year outreach programs.

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director on political planning, risk assessment, and resource allocation.

  • Directly supervise and support the Down Ballot Director, Field Director, and Party Affairs Director, including conducting regular 1:1s focused on strategy, performance, staff development, and problem solving.

  • Ensure directors are collaborating effectively across departments to avoid operating in silos, particularly between Field, Digital, Communications, and Party Affairs on voter education, RCV content, and community engagement programming

  • Set clear goals, benchmarks, and timelines across all political, candidate and field programs.

  • Ensure consistent tracking, reporting, and evaluation of voter contact, volunteer engagement, candidate recruitment, down ballot races and training outcomes.

  • Ensure message alignment across voter contact scripts, trainings, and public-facing materials.

  • Coordinate with fundraising staff to support program-based fundraising efforts, including storytelling, metrics, and donor engagement.

  • Maintain strong working relationships with:

  • County and Municipal Democratic Committees, and serve as their primary senior liaison for committees participating in the incentive grant program

  • State Democratic State Committee leadership

  • SDCC, HDCC, and allied organizations

  • Oversee governance processes including conventions, caucuses, delegate selection, and large-scale party events.

  • Oversee leadership development among staff, volunteers, candidates, and local party leaders.

  • Help build a pipeline of talent—from volunteers and organizers to candidates and future party leaders.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications

  • 2+ cycles of field leadership experience, ideally including one cycle as a Field Director, or equivalent.

  • Additional experience in local elections, caucus leadership, and/or political matters recommended.

  • Demonstrated success in building and executing strategic voter contact plans at scale.

  • Strong management skills, including experience supervising and mentoring staff.

  • Experience working with party committees, campaigns, and coalition partners.

  • Fluency in VAN and voter file tools along with VPB, Spoke, Scale to Win, etc.; comfort working with spreadsheets and field data.

  • Strong strategic thinker with the ability to balance short-term wins and long-term infrastructure.

  • Commitment to Democratic values, equity and inclusion, and protecting voting rights.

  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends, as needed, and ability to travel statewide for hands-on management of staff and programs.

  • Past experience in Maine is a plus.
