JOB DESCRIPTION

Communications Associate (Contract)

Location: Remote (Colorado-based preferred)

Compensation: $5,000 per month (40 hours a week)

Experience Level: 1-3 years

About Us

The Bighorn Company is a growing, Colorado-based political communications and public relations firm that serves high-impact clients across the United States. From top-of-the-ticket races to statewide ballot initiatives, we help shape the conversation on the issues that matter most. As a relatively new firm, we offer the energy and creativity of a startup with the experience necessary to deliver winning results on major campaigns and advocacy efforts.

The Role

We're seeking a Communications Associate for a three-month independent contractor engagement (40 hours per week), with opportunity for longer extension, to join our growing team and play a key role in delivering exceptional communications and political strategies for our diverse client portfolio. This is an opportunity to work directly with senior staff and partners while building your expertise across campaigns, advocacy, nonprofit communications, and government relations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support senior staff and partners with client work across campaigns, advocacy, corporate, nonprofit, and government communications

  • Conduct and analyze research to inform communications and political strategies

  • Write compelling content including press releases, social media posts, website copy, client reports, and other communications materials

  • Manage social media programs and coordinate traditional and digital media campaigns

  • Collaborate on placed media programs and earned media initiatives

What We're Looking For

Experience & Background:

  • 1-3 years of experience in politics, campaigns, or elections, or in adjacent fields like government or marketing that involve public engagement and persuasion

  • Previous work in communications, press, or digital roles strongly preferred

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing skills

  • Strong critical thinking skills and communications instincts

  • Familiarity with all major social media platforms

  • Proficiency with digital tools including Canva, Asana, Slack, Google Workspace, and news clipping services

  • Strong research and analytical abilities

  • Experience in fielding and responding to press inquiries, staffing press interviews, writing press releases, and preparing spokespeople for media interviews

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant field like communications, journalism, or political science is a plus but not required – we value work experience, skills, and passion over specific educational background

Personal Qualities:

  • Thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

  • Adaptable and eager to learn

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, on strict deadlines

  • Passion for political communications and making a difference

What We Offer

Compensation:

  • $5,000 monthly (40 hours a week)

Work Environment and Growth Opportunities:

  • Fully remote company with monthly in-person team gatherings (candidates based in Colorado preferred)

  • Collaborative and supportive team culture

  • Opportunity to work on important, high-level projects across multiple time zones

  • Direct mentorship from experienced professionals

  • Exposure to diverse client work spanning campaigns, advocacy, and organizational development

  • Professional development support and training
