JOB DESCRIPTION

The office of Delegate Nadarius Clark is seeking applicants to join the team as Chief of Staff. The Chief of Staff will be responsible for managing the staff and directing strategic decision making in the interest of the office both during session, and in-district. The ideal candidate should be prepared to relocate to the Hampton Roads region (Suffolk, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News or Virginia Beach preferred). Salary is commensurate with experience with a range of $52,000 to $62,000 a year with full healthcare, dental, and vision benefits.

Chief of Staff Responsibilities

  • Manage the Delegate’s schedule of meetings with constituents, elected officials, community organizations both in Richmond and in the district, as well as committee and subcommittee meetings during the legislative session.

  • Prepare and present relevant legislative research to the Delegate, and prepare written remarks before committee presentations and policy meetings.

  • Help make strategic decisions in the interest of the office and manage staff priorities on a daily basis.

  • Review constituent outreach via email and social media and develop systems to deliver concise, prompt responses.

  • Act on behalf of the Delegate and a representative of the office at official functions, lobbying events, and other organizational meetings.

Chief of Staff Qualifications

  • At least one full term (2 legislative sessions) of experience in state government.

  • Strong writing skills and an ability to adapt quickly to different styles, topics, and formats. Thorough and resourceful research skills and the ability to and summarize information efficiently.

  • Organized, accountable, and systems-oriented work ethic. Legislative work requires extraordinary attention to detail. An ability to prioritize tasks by urgency and importance is essential.

  • An instinct to be an industrious self-starter. Knowing the answers is less important than knowing how to find your way to someone who does.

  • Comfort with core tech tools and eager to learn more: GSuite, the Microsoft Office suite, Slack, AirTable, Todoist, Canva, Wordpress, and NGP (a CRM).
