JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities

Electoral (~80% of time)

  • Plan and implement a strategic member-to-member electoral program to elect labor-endorsed candidates at the local, state, and federal levels across multiple Houston-area counties:

  • Administer voter registration campaigns

  • Run candidate academies for potential and endorsed candidates

  • Coordinate Committee on Political Education interviews and endorsement process

  • Develop and monitor budgets

  • Craft and execute large-scale direct voter contact programs, including targeting, data management, mail, canvassing, phone/text banks, and digital advertising

  • Recruit, train, and oversee field staff, member volunteers, and release staff

  • Coordinate with state and federal AFL-CIO, campaigns, parties, PACs, and labor/community allies where legally feasible

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement all aspects of the Working People PAC field program targeting non-union voters — including fundraising, staffing, and compliance reporting

  • Identify and train union members to run for office

  • Support political field activities, lobby visits, phone banking, and events for the federation's public policy campaigns at all levels of government

Communications (~20% of time)

Provide communications support across the federation's programmatic areas. Responsibilities include:

  • Design, produce, and deliver mail, canvass materials, and digital ads

  • Draft communications copy including media advisories, press releases, talking points, and emails

  • Secure earned media coverage

  • Manage and grow multiple social media channels

  • Maintain and update the federation's website

  • Prepare written and graphic reports

  • Continually improve the federation's internal and external communications infrastructure

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of leadership experience in electoral campaigns and field program management

  • Proven ability to design and implement effective campaign plans

  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and reporting requirements

  • Advanced proficiency in VAN, Excel/Google Sheets, databases, and presentation tools

  • Strong relationship-building skills with stakeholders, candidates, and elected officials

  • Experience recruiting, training, and managing volunteers and paid field teams

  • Excellent organizational, project management, and attention-to-detail skills

  • Strong written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Commitment to economic justice and workers' rights

  • Ability to handle stress and shifting priorities with calm, flexibility, and discretion

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

Preferred

  • Strong fundraising track record

  • Strategic thinker with experience in the labor movement

  • Fluent written and spoken Spanish

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $80,000–$95,000 depending on qualifications and experience

Position Details

This is a full-time, in-person, salaried exempt position based in Harris County. The role requires regular travel throughout the greater Houston area, some evening and weekend availability, and occasional out-of-town travel.
