JOB DESCRIPTION

House Democratic Caucus Majority Whip, Delegate Destiny LeVere Bolling, seeks a Legislative Aide to join her office serving Virginia’s 80th House District. Legislative Aide is a full-time, year-round position supporting the Delegate's policy and community engagement work. The position offers an exciting opportunity to serve the Henrico community and help shape policy in Virginia.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Legislative Assistants are hired by individual legislators to manage the affairs of the legislator’s office. Under the general supervision of the Delegate, a Legislative Assistant shall have the ability to plan, organize, and carry out a broad range of functions, which may include, but are not limited to:

OFFICE MANAGEMENT:

  1. Participate intensively in the management and day-to-day operations of the legislative office

  2. Provide general office support

  3. Recruit, hire, and develop job descriptions for Session Aides, District Office Fellows, and Interns

  4. Supervise Session Aides, Interns, District Office Fellows, and Administrative Assistants

  5. Prioritizes member’s schedules. Advises member of all appointments and meetings; provides background material

  6. Establishes and maintains office files of correspondence and general information by subject matter

  7. Delivers member requests for copying, printing, and faxing to appropriate support staff

  8. Coordinates delivery and maintains necessary office supplies

  9. Coordinates requests for office maintenance

  10. Answers the telephone and takes messages for the Delegate; maintains telephone log

  11. Greets and responds to office visitors

  12. Opens office mail and email; drafts appropriate responses as necessary

  13. Serves as liaison between the member and others; exercises independent judgment to determine and implement the appropriate course of action to serve the member

  14. Act as a gatekeeper between Member, staff, constituents, and legislators

CONSTITUENT SERVICES

  1. Serves as a liaison for constituents on casework, responds to inquiries by seeking solutions to problems or assisting in the communication with the appropriate agency

  2. Responds to requests of constituents for information; conducts research to respond appropriately and follows to conclusion

  3. Prepares correspondence with the appropriate format and conforming to all the rules of grammar and style

  4. Coordinates school and group visits to the Capitol

PUBLIC POLICY

  1. Gather and assemble information for drafting bills, speeches, newsletters, or special requests

  2. Conducts basic research and analysis on specific problems or projects, as directed

  3. Tracks progression of member’s bills through the legislative process, including receipt of patron notices, coordinating testimony, and preparing and maintaining bill files

  4. Tracks legislation in assigned committees or areas of interest through the legislative process

  5. Identifies and monitors district and session-specific issues (hot topics)

  6. Facilitates and coordinates communication between the member, legislators, staff, agencies, and interested parties in the development, creation, and progression of legislation

  7. Provides assistance to the member for daily floor session by reviewing and annotating the daily calendar

  8. Prepares member for committee meetings by obtaining meeting information and dockets

  9. Coordinates communication with Committee Operations staff for meeting space, meeting notices, and docket information for committee and subcommittee meetings (if member is Chairman)

  10. Prepares and distributes press releases and other public information

Qualifications

Prior political experience is not required but it is strongly preferred. Many of the skills that make an outstanding Legislative Aide are developed in other industries. To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Strong written communication: Ability to draft and tailor content quickly across different styles and formats.

  • Research ability: Skilled at conducting timely, thorough research and distilling findings into clear, actionable summaries.

  • High organization and continuous improvement mindset: Systems-oriented approach with a focus on building efficient workflows that stand up over time.

  • Digital proficiency and adaptability: Comfortable learning and using new technologies. Current tools include Google Workspace (GSuite), Microsoft Office, Signal, LIS, IndiGov (CRM), and VoteBuilder.

  • Collaborative, relationship-focused style: Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituents and internal/external partners.

  • Commitment to service: Genuine dedication to community engagement, with a team culture that values altruism, discretion, integrity, humility, and good humor.

Location and Schedule

Legislative Session (Early January–Early March):

  • On-site availability: During the session, staff should plan to reside in Richmond.

  • Weekend coverage: Staff must be available for potential travel to Henrico on weekends as needed.

  • Flexible hours: Workdays during session can be long and unpredictable, including availability outside normal business hours.

  • Typical hours: Average working hours during the legislative session generally fall within 6:00 AM–6:00 PM, though schedules may vary based on legislative activity.

Off-Session (Outside the Legislative Session):

  • Location: Greater flexibility. The Legislative Aide would typically reside in the Richmond area or nearby and may travel occasionally within the district.

  • Typical hours of operation are 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, though schedules may vary and flexibility/availability outside of these hours may be needed based on legislative activity (i.e. special constituent meetings/presentations, town halls, community events, etc.)

Community Engagement:

  • To support the office’s presence at community events, the role includes occasional evening and weekend hours.

Compensation

  • Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
