Description

The Director, Finance and Accounting, is the leader responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and effectiveness of all accounting and financial reporting operations for LWVUS and LWVEF. This role oversees daily accounting activities, ensures timely and compliant reporting, strengthens internal controls, manages audits and tax filings, and provides critical financial insights to organizational leadership.

The Director, Finance and Accounting partners closely with the CFO and senior leadership to support financial stewardship, strategic decision-making, and transparent reporting that advance LWVUS’s mission to empower voters and defend democracy. The position also supervises accounting staff and cultivates a collaborative, equitable, and high-performing finance function.

This position is located in Washington, DC, and is hybrid, requiring in-office attendance a minimum of two days a week.

The annual salary range for this position is $140,000-$150,000.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Reporting & Analysis (Priority Area)

  • Prepare and deliver accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Conduct budget-to-actual variance analysis and present key insights to leadership, including the CFO and Board committees.
  • Maintain a strong financial reporting calendar and ensure timely close processes.

Accounting Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including:
    • General ledger
    • Accounts payable and receivable
    • Cash flow monitoring
    • Payroll accounting
    • Fixed assets and depreciation
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting standards.

Compliance & Audit

  • Lead the annual financial audit, including preparation of schedules, audit requests, and year-end close.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of Form 990 filings for LWVUS and LWVEF.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting regulations, state and federal reporting requirements, and organizational policies.

Grant Management

  • Monitor and track grant spending, revenue recognition, and restricted fund balances.
  • Ensure compliance with donor restrictions, federal award requirements (if applicable), and multi-year grant conditions.
  • Prepare or support the preparation of financial reports to funders in partnership with the Development and Program teams.

Internal Controls

  • Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls, financial policies, and procedural documentation.
  • Establish safeguards to protect financial assets and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Lead improvements in financial systems, workflows, and audit readiness.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, promoting high performance, accountability, and inclusion.
  • Provide financial insight, analysis, and guidance to the CFO, senior leadership, and Board committees.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Development, HR, Operations, and Program teams to support organizational planning and compliance.
Requirements

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Experience

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit fund accounting.
  • Experience using Sage Intacct
  • Demonstrated experience preparing financial statements, managing audits, and overseeing day-to-day accounting operations.
  • Experience supervising staff and leading process improvements.

Certification

  • CPA Required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in nonprofit accounting systems such as QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar ERP platforms.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, complex formulas, data modeling).
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, nonprofit fund accounting, and restricted fund management.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets and office machinery. Constantly operates a laptop/computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
