Communications Director
Michigan Democratic Party
The Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) is hiring for a full-time Communications Director responsible for aggressively pushing the party’s key messages through earned media to support the governor’s policy agenda and hold Michigan Republicans accountable. The Communications Director will report to the MDP Chair.
The Communications Director is a member of the IBEW Local 1106.
Responsibilities
- Draft and send multiple press releases each week on legislative issues to support Democratic policy priorities.
- Pitch original story ideas and research information to news reporters.
- Develop messaging materials for party officials, officeholders, and volunteers, including message boxes, message triangles, and talking points.
- Draft and submit 2-3 op-eds per month from stakeholders to newspapers in key media markets.
- Plan and execute earned media events in key media markets across Michigan, including press conferences, rallies, and roundtables.
- Participate in communications table meetings with fellow Democratic communicators to coordinate issue-based messaging and strategy.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree is required in political science, public relations, marketing, journalism, English, creative writing, public policy, or a closely related field.
- Strong written and verbal skills.
- At least two election cycles worth of experience working in political communications.
- On-the-record experience with print, radio, and TV news reporters is preferred.
- Work is generally in an office setting, however some travel may be required.
- The applicant must be willing to work in a fast-paced campaign environment. Periodically long work hours are required.
