The Michigan Democratic Party is seeking an experienced Organizing Director for the 2026 Coordinated Campaign. The Organizing Director will be critical to developing and implementing the volunteer recruitment and voter contact programs that win close elections.
At their core, the Organizing Director is a coach, who is still always ready to roll up their sleeves and jump onto the field. They’re able to navigate both the high-level strategy and on the ground execution of their programs, while proactively devising creative solutions to complex challenges. The Organizing Director is excited to lead a large team to hit ambitious goals while maintaining a culture of inclusivity and resilience.
This is a critical role serving on the senior leadership team and will work closely with other departments and stakeholders to implement programs that elect Democrats up and down the ballot. This position is full-time and based in Detroit, Michigan.
Key Responsibilities & Characteristics
- Program Strategy: Develop and implement the coordinated campaign’s statewide organizing program, including staff development, volunteer recruitment, and voter contact strategies
- Team Leadership: Hire and oversee all Organizing department staff, including Deputy Organizing Directors, Regional Organizing Directors, and Organizers
- Systems & Accountability: Create systems and communication structures that provide clear direction and motivate teams to achieve ambitious volunteer and voter contact goals
- Training & Development: Oversee a training program that boosts staff productivity and develops volunteers’ skills
- Collaboration: Collaborate with Data, Operations, and Voter Access departments to effectively implement programs
Qualifications
- Experience: At least 3+ cycles of organizing experience, with a strong preference for at least 2 cycles of experience in either a Deputy or Director role on a statewide electoral organizing program, with a preference for Michigan-specific experience
- Management: Experience managing staff through multiple layers, including experience managing unionized staff
- Communication: Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, especially as applied to building a strong, inclusive management culture that supports staff development
- Strategic Coordination: Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate with stakeholders across all levels of the organization
- Technical Fluency: Proven fluency with VAN and other organizing tools
Salary, Benefits, and Logistics
The salary range is $8,500 – $9,500 per month. This position includes a full benefits package of health, vision, and dental insurance coverage.
Applicants must live in or be willing to relocate to Michigan. Applicants must have the ability to travel throughout the state for up to several days at a time and must have a valid driver’s license.
