Description
The Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) is hiring for a full-time Press Secretary responsible for aggressively pushing the party’s key messages through earned media to hold Michigan Republicans accountable and support Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. The communications team is looking for a strong writer and a team player who has the ability to manage competing priorities. Qualified applicants should have an advanced understanding of how to accomplish the party’s communications goals through proactive earned media opportunities. This opportunity is an excellent chance to build professional relationships within Michigan’s tough press corps.
The Press Secretary is a member of the IBEW Local 1106.
Key Responsibilities & Characteristics
- Manage day-to-day press operations, including responding to media inquiries, drafting and distributing event advisories, press releases, statements, and more.
- Assist with pitching original story ideas and research information to reporters.
- Develop messaging materials for party officials, officeholders, and volunteers, including message boxes, message triangles, and talking points.
- Staff the Chair for interviews and open-press events.
- Plan and execute earned media events in key media markets across Michigan, including press conferences, rallies, and roundtables.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree is required in political science, public relations, marketing, journalism, English, creative writing, public policy, or a closely related field.
- Strong written and verbal skills.
- At least one election cycle worth of experience working in political communications.
- Work is generally in an office setting, however some travel may be required.
- The applicant must be willing to work in a fast-paced campaign environment. Periodically long work hours are required.
