About the Opportunity

The Michigan Democratic Party seeks a talented, driven, strategic Deputy Voter Access Director for Election Administration to join our team for the 2026 Coordinated Campaign. Michigan will be one of the most closely-watched states during the 2026 Midterm election cycle, and the Voter Access Department will play a critical role in ensuring that every eligible voter is able to cast a ballot that will count and that all legally cast ballots are counted.

The Deputy Voter Access Director for Election Administration will work closely with the Voter Access Director to ensure that election administrators across the state are in the best possible position to facilitate voting according to applicable election law. We are seeking someone who is fueled by the satisfaction of fighting for justice and defending democracy, a strategic and creative problem-solver who is eager to work with staff and volunteers to create meaningful and lasting change for Michigan and Michiganders. This position reports to the Voter Access Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a robust volunteer-driven election administration monitoring program, including recruiting, training, assigning, and deploying volunteers; management of reporting systems and issue-resolution processes for same; and working cooperatively with the Voter Access Director to implement an advocacy strategy to expand access to voting opportunities across the state.
  • Manage and support staff members responsible for recruiting, assigning, and supporting volunteers.
  • Communicate directly with clerks and other election officials as needed to address voting and election issues and advocate for timely voter-favorable resolutions.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of Michigan Election Law and applicable federal law and serve as an expert on election law and administration in the state of Michigan for the Voter Access Team and Coordinated Campaign.
  • Support the development of training and reporting systems to support the Voter Access Team and Coordinated Campaign Staff, including a system for flagging, tracking, and resolving voting and election-related issues.
  • Develop and maintain strong data practices, ensuring that all staff and volunteer reports are timely, accurate, and escalated appropriately.
  • Support the wider Voter Access mission through supplemental training assistance as needed.
  • Prepare regular reports for national partners and other stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Voter Access Director.

Skills and Qualifications

  • JD strongly preferred; professional legal experience required.
  • Experience on a political campaign or equivalent experience working in a voter protection or organizing role or some combination of comparable political, voter protection, and organizing experience.
  • Ability to manage up, down, and horizontally within a team to ensure timely and efficient communication and advancement toward established objectives.
  • Familiarity with voter protection issues and programmatic priorities and operations; experience and familiarity with Michigan elections is a plus.
  • Experience communicating complex issues to a lay audience for informational and engagement purposes in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Experience using LBJ, VAN/Votebuilder, Google Suite products, and other database tools to track and manage volunteers, voters, and issues.
  • Strong organizational and strategic thinking skills with the ability to translate analysis into action.
  • Strong lens and judgment on issues of race and equity, a sophisticated understanding of racial equity and structural racism as it relates to our work, and an awareness of voter suppression’s disproportionate impact on marginalized communities.
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced, in-person campaign environment, which may require long, irregular hours, including some nights and weekends.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and balance competing priorities.

Compensation and Location

The salary is $6,500 per month. Applicants must live in or be willing to relocate to Detroit. This position includes a full benefits package of health, vision, and dental insurance coverage.
