Compensation: Total stipend of $1,000.00 disbursed at the end of the program

Organization:

Michigan United is a statewide organization of individuals, faith, labor, civil rights, small business, and social service groups working together for racial and economic justice through community organizing.

Opportunity:

Michigan United is seeking a dedicated instructor to provide civics instruction to adult immigrants to pass the naturalization exam. Legal Permanent Residents do not have the same rights and protections as a United States Citizen, such as access to federal jobs, retirement security, educational options, and full participation in civic life. We aim to expand these rights and protections to more eligible immigrants by encouraging and assisting them through the naturalization process. At Michigan United, we offer citizenship classes, English Second Language (ESL) classes, and legal services to ensure that immigrants receive comprehensive support while navigating the path to becoming a United States Citizen.

Responsibilities:

As the Citizenship Instructor for Adult Immigrants, your responsibilities will include:

  • Citizenship Class Preparation & Instruction: Devote 2 hours a week to meticulously prepare citizenship classes and 2 hours a week to skillfully instructing students, amounting to a total commitment of 4 hours per week.
  • Volunteer Coordination: Recruit and coordinate volunteers to support the citizenship classes, fostering a thriving learning community.
  • Effective Communication: Keep students and volunteers informed about upcoming events and confirm their attendance through weekly emails.
  • Personalized Support: Provide one-on-one assistance to citizenship students during class, including sample interviews, review of the citizenship exam, and administering assessments to citizenship students, covering the citizenship interview test, reading for the citizenship test, and government and history for the citizenship test.
  • Follow-up & Engagement: Conduct follow-ups with citizenship students to encourage regular attendance and active participation in the learning process.
  • Virtual Motivation: Extend support and motivation to students outside of class, inspiring their continuous progress.

Qualifications & Requirements:

We are looking for individuals who possess the following qualifications and meet the requirements:

  • Passion for Immigrant Communities: Demonstrate genuine interest in immigrant communities and a sincere desire to support their English language learning journey.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Establish relationships based on respect and show sensitivity towards individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Orientation Attendance: Willingness to attend a two-hour orientation to get familiar with the organization’s values and practices.
  • Tech Savviness: Basic knowledge of technology, including email, internet usage, and digital literacy.
  • Enthusiasm & Creativity: Highly enthusiastic and creative individuals capable of motivating and inspiring others.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in Arabic, Burmese, Spanish is a plus, as it enables us to serve a diverse range of immigrant communities. However, it is not a mandatory requirement.
  • Teaching Experience: While previous tutoring or teaching experience is advantageous, it is not required. We offer one-on-one training with an experienced coordinator/instructor/volunteer to support your success.
