Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Field Advocacy to lead and expand our grassroots advocacy efforts across the United States. Based in our Washington, DC headquarters, the Director will develop a national field engagement strategy for federal and state advocacy, building on NCJW’s history of successful advocacy work to advance NCJW’s policy priorities across the country. This leadership role will be responsible for developing and executing a strategic vision and pedagogy for our national network, requiring a collaborative and strategic thinker with deep knowledge of policy and advocacy, coalition-building, community organizing, and the Jewish communal landscape. The ideal candidate is an experienced manager and organizer who understands how to build power at the grassroots and grasstops levels, drive policy change, and engage diverse communities. This role reports to NCJW’s Senior Director of Government Relations and Advocacy and Chief Field Engagement Officer and is expected in the Washington, DC office a minimum of one day a week.
Primary Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive national campaign strategy that strengthens grassroots engagement, builds coalitions, and advances NCJW’s federal and state policy priorities.
- Create advocacy and organizing pedagogy, training modules, and ongoing professional support for the NCJW regional directors, ensuring they have the skills, strategies, and resources to build powerful, effective campaigns in their regions.
- Provide vision, guidance, and regular support to regional directors and volunteer leaders on grassroots and grasstops organizing initiatives, in collaboration with the Engagement and Leadership team, to ensure strong regional impact and alignment with national goals.
- Ensure effective communication, training, and support for professional and volunteer leaders and advocates.
- Collaborate with the Engagement and Leadership team to oversee the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of regional directors, building a high-impact team to advance our grassroots organizing and advocacy efforts nationwide.
- Serve as the central field coordinator on advocacy-based campaigns and liaison between our DC-based Government Relations and Advocacy, Engagement and Leadership, and Communications teams.
- Manage the development of digital resources and campaign materials to support issue-based advocacy initiatives.
- Partner with the Communications and Engagement and Leadership teams to create and identify opportunities to use personal stories to advance policy objectives, including storybanking and op-ed placement.
- Supervise and work together with the Associate Director of State Policy Advocacy to ensure effective communication, training, and support for professional and volunteer leaders and advocates.
- Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, including coalition partners, community leaders, and national Jewish and secular organizations, and advise regional directors and local volunteers as they build and hone relationships with local partners.
- Analyze and assess field advocacy metrics and impact; adjust strategy and operations as needed to maximize effectiveness.
Key Qualifications
Minimum of seven years of experience in grassroots advocacy, community organizing, or coalition-building, with at least three years in a leadership role.
Proven experience with federal policymaking processes and a clear understanding of the state-level policy and advocacy landscape.
Demonstrated experience managing staff and/or teams, with the ability to mentor, support, and inspire a geographically dispersed field team.
Deep understanding of the Jewish community, its diversity, and the issues that matter to Jewish communal life and policy priorities.
Demonstrated success in building coalitions and working across lines of difference to advance shared goals.
Strong strategic thinking, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Experience developing and executing advocacy campaigns, both legislative and community-based.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
DC-based and able to work in person at our Washington, DC headquarters.
Strong leadership and team management skills.
Experience working in advocacy, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations preferred.
Interest in social justice, and progressive advocacy issues.
Willingness to travel as needed (estimated 20-30%).
Salary and Benefits
Salary range: $130,000 – $140,000 annually — commensurate with experience.
