Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates, which operate non-profit health centers across the U.S. PPFA also works to educate the public on and advocate for issues of sexual and reproductive health. Formed as the advocacy arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund is a separate non-profit membership organization tax-exempt under section 501(c)(4). The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and limited electoral activity, including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education in furtherance of the Planned Parenthood mission.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Action Fund (Action Fund) seek a dynamic and effective Specialist, Public Policy. This job reports to the Director, Public Policy on the Public Policy team, in the Research & Policy department in the External Affairs division of PPFA. The Research & Policy division uses data-driven policy agendas to inform messaging for target audiences and advance access to sex education and health care.

Purpose

  • The Specialist, Public Policy supports the day-to-day operations of the Public Policy team by tracking policy developments, coordinating internal processes, and contributing to written policy materials.
  • This role helps ensure the team stays informed about regulatory and policy changes, supports collaboration across departments and affiliates, and contributes to the development of materials that inform advocacy and policy efforts.
  • Through strong organization, communication, and attention to detail, the Specialist helps the Public Policy team operate efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced policy environment.

Engagement

  • Collaborates with colleagues across PPFA departments - including Research & Policy and other External Affairs teams to share relevant policy updates and insights.
  • Works with members of the Public Policy team to develop systems, track advocacy efforts, and on written materials for a wide range of audiences.
  • Independently assesses, chooses, and disseminates information through regulatory reports and news clips that impact organizational priorities to the Research & Policy team more broadly.
  • Engages with affiliate staff through monthly rulemaking calls, webinars, and annual 340B certification support.

Delivery

  • Tracks federal rule-making and other official administrative actions that impact Planned Parenthood’s policy goals with minimal oversight.
  • Manages monthly affiliate rulemaking and comments workgroup and provides and updates related resources.
  • Researches and contributes to policy materials including: drafts of factsheets, issue briefs, and other materials and updates resources, as needed by the Public Policy team.
  • Advances progress on multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Coordinates agendas and notes for weekly team meetings and assists Research & Policy in department–wide endeavors, including team retreats and goal planning sessions and drives necessary follow-up coming out of those meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 1–3 years of experience in public policy, advocacy, research, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of issues relevant to sexual and reproductive health care, coverage and rights.
  • Willingness and ability to conduct proactive research to improve systems and processes.
  • Minimum of 2 years work experience.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Experience researching and synthesizing information into clear, accessible formats.
  • Knowledge of federal or state government processes in developing policy preferred.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to move multiple projects forward independently and collaboratively.
  • Commitment to health care access and PPFA’s mission.
  • Appreciation and sensitivity to diverse groups and cultural differences.

Travel

  • 10% domestic or less domestic travel
